EVANSTON, Ill. - The Indiana women's soccer team fell to the Northwestern Wildcats, 1-0, today at the Thomas Athletic Complex in Evanston. The Hoosiers remained offensive minded throughout the match but were unable to capitalize off their aggressive play to notch an equalizer.
"Yet another performance where one mistake costs you the game," head coach Mick Lyon said. "Despite playing well and owning the majority of the possessions, we came up empty handed. When a team gets into a losing skid, it can be difficult to get out of a rut. Sometimes you need a bit of good fortune or luck to happen and we are still searching for our piece of good fortune. I do want to credit the women for playing soccer and keeping a competitive edge throughout the match. We now will move onto to Sunday where we will try to be flawless defensively and play creative soccer against Wisconsin."
The loss drops the Hoosiers to 5-8-1 on the season, 1-5 Big Ten. The Wildcats improve to 8-6-1 overall and 1-5-1 in conference action.
Northwestern's goal came from freshman Krystal Patterson in the 22nd minute. Freshman Jeanette Lorne served the assist with a pass to the top right of the box, while Patterson finished the scoring duty with a goal in the left side of the net.
Indiana's best scoring chances started in the first period as freshman forward Molly Kruger dribbled into the box before being cutoff by the Wildcats' defense. The Hoosiers challenged again in the second period as senior Robin Barker broke two defenders to make her way into the box. The shot finished wide on the near side of the field but resulted in two consecutive corners for IU in the 57th minute.
The Hoosiers continued to pressure the Wildcats' end of the field in the second half to outshoot the NU 10-8 in the final period. However, the Wildcats sat on a one-point cushion and kept the Hoosiers out of the goal for the remainder of the match.
Goalie duties for the Hoosiers included both sophomore Stacey Van Boxmeer and senior Lauren Fabbro. Fabbro took first half duties collecting five saves, while Van Boxmeer denied three in the loss.
Indiana's road trip continues as they look to rebound from the loss to take on Wisconsin on Sunday, Oct. 16, in Madison, Wis.
