AUBURN, Ala. - The Indiana women's swimming and diving squad provided some positive signs for the future, but could not overcome a dominant Auburn Tiger squad coming off an NCAA runner-up performance. In the end, the Hoosiers fell to Auburn, 165-124. Overall, Auburn captured 11 titles, while the Hoosiers snared five.
"I thought our women showed up tonight," Indiana head coach Ray Looze said. "Our freshmen swam well, and our veterans did the same. Leila Vaziri, Kristen Bradley and Lauren Torpey did well. Everyone swam as well as they could, but we are a bit thin and very young. I was proud, however, how everyone reacted. We were not afraid of them which is nice to see."
Defending Big Ten Diver of the Year Christina Loukas picked up the one-meter title with a 294.90, while junior Lindsay Weigle garnered the three-meter crown with a 302.47. Additionally, freshman Allison Kay seized the 100-yard butterfly title in 55.82, while the quartet of junior Annica Lofstedt, junior Clarissa Wentworth, senior Kristen Bradley and junior Leila Vaziri won the 200-yard freestyle in 1:36.27.
Not only did the divers sweep the titles, they claimed eight top-five performances on the evening. Along with Loukas' win in the one-meter, sophomore Jade Summerlin finished third with a 233.02, while Weigle claimed fifth with a 228.52. Meanwhile, IU nabbed all five spots in the three-meter as Loukas took second with a 248.25 and Summerlin finished third with a 241.57. Additionally, sophomore Ashley Greene finished fourth with a 233.92, while junior Heather Chapman took fifth with a 222.29.
"We had a lot of new dives today," Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "We had some bright spots today. We are going to take some things home from the meet and use it as motivation and inspiration to work a little bit harder to perfect them."
Next up, the Hoosiers head to Minneapolis, Minn., to tangle with Minnesota on Oct. 29.
