MADISON, Wis. - The Indiana women's soccer team had what it took to top the Wisconsin Badgers today, 2-1, as freshman forward Molly Kruger and senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski tally the goals for the Hoosiers. IU, who rebounded from a heartbreaking loss on Friday to Northwestern, dominated against the Badgers for a much needed victory today.
"This is perhaps the best game of Hoosier soccer I have seen all season," head coach Mick Lyon said. "It was a tremendous effort by the Hoosier women. In the first half, we did an outstanding job of attacking the ball and just destroyed Wisconsin. In the second, Wisconsin stepped up their offense and we an outstanding effort from all of our defense to limit them to just one goal."
Kruger notched the games first goal off a serve from sophomore forward Suzie Teixeira in the 29th minute of action. The goal, Kruger's second, and the assist, Teixeira's second, sent the Hoosier into the locker room with the 1-0 lead.
On the statistics sheet, the Hoosier trailed the Badgers, 17-9 in shots and 7-3 in corners, but needed only two shots on goal to defeat the Badgers.
"The women produced some of the best soccer I have seen all year," Lyon said.
The second half again, though the Badgers found the net once off a boot from Elise Weber in the 75th minute off an assist form Marisa Brown, saw the Hoosiers dominate the their half of the field.
"In the second half, Wisconsin played four forwards and kept serving the ball in the box," Lyon said. "Our defense did a good job of keeping them out of the goal, a hand to the back four defenders for us. While they allowed one goal on the day, they played a great game of soccer today."
Zmijewski, who now owns five goals to her name and leads IU in the category, sent in the game winner for the Hoosiers in the 77th minute.
"We were able to recover from a questionable goal from Wisconsin and net our own just two minutes later, "Lyon said. "Kristen had a great look and capitalized off it with the goal."
Senior Lauren Fabbro, seven saves in the victory, had an outstanding day in goal for the Hoosiers collecting a game and season high in saves during the performance.
The Hoosiers return home for the remainder of the Big Ten regular season to take on Illinois on Friday, Oct. 21, before hosting Iowa on Sunday, Oct. 23. IU ends its regular season against the Purdue Boilermakers on Thursday, Oct. 27.
