KENT, Ohio. - The No. 8 Indiana field hockey team improved its record to 10-1 with a convincing 5-2 win over Kent State on Sunday in Kent, Ohio. Led by senior Mallory Reabold's two goals, the Hoosiers overcame a disappointing 1-1 tie at the half to put away the Golden Flashes and continue their seven-game winning streak.
"Although we got the win, I think Kent State is the best winless team in the country. They played us hard. The first half really belonged to them. We were able to make some adjustments in the second period that allowed us to create some more opportunities to score. Nikki Orciuch had one of the best games of her career. She created a lot of chances out there and really led this team today. Erin Isler came off the bench and did an awesome job. She was poised and shut down her opponent."
Indiana put the first point on the board when sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen netted her first goal of the season. Kent State's Stephanie Bernthal evened things up with 13 minutes left in the half to put the score in a 1-1 knot at the half.
The Hoosiers came out firing in the second period. Senior Nikki Orciuch didn't waste any time and scored her second goal of the weekend only four minutes into the half. Five minutes later, Reabold put one past Kent State's goalkeeper Kara Copeland for her fifth goal of the season. The Golden Flashes added some pressure when Melanie Bierens scored with 20 minutes left in the half, but it was not enough as Reabold notched her second goal of the game giving the Hoosiers their two-goal cushion back.
With six minutes left in the game, sophomore Kate O'Connell found freshman Katie Kiper for her second score of the year to put the game away for IU. Goalkeeper Haley Exner recorded four more saves in the victory.
The No. 8 Hoosiers return home to face Big Ten foe Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. and highly-ranked Louisville on Tuesday, October 11 at 4 p.m. in Mellencamp Pavilion.
