Bloomington, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team played a solid match amidst a rainy evening on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium tonight, but fell to a late-game goal to the visiting Illinois Fighting Illini, 1-0. The Hoosiers and Illini battled until the last minutes of the match before the Fighting Illini fired the game-winning goal in the 87th minute.
"Soccer has been known to be a brutal game as far as results," head coach Mick Lyon said, "and we got the bad end of the result tonight. We played tremendous in the first period and I thought remained in an attacking frame of mind throughout. We had to come out and make some big plays today and in the end did not do that."
The loss drops the Hoosiers to 6-9-1 on the season, 2-6 Big Ten. The Illini improve to 9-4-3 overall and 5-2-1 in conference action.
Illinois' senior defender Kelly Campbell notched the game-winner at the 86:10 mark off a free kick just outside the 25-yard mark. Campbell fired the shot at Hoosier goalie Stacey Van Boxmeer, who ended the night with two saves in the second period. The eventual game ender took an Illini bounce off the slick field to pass the IU goalie and net the game's only goal.
Indiana's best scoring attempt came mid-way through the first stanza as freshman forward Molly Kruger sent in a chip from the far side of the field, just nicking the cross bar. Kruger ended the night with three shots.
Senior Lauren Fabbro, who started in goal for IU, completed the other half of the Hoosier goalie duo with three saves in the first period.
Indiana takes the field again on Sunday, Oct. 23, as they play part of a doubleheader with the Indiana men's soccer team. The women take on Iowa in a noon match-up before fans are treated to the Hoosier men's squad who ends its Big Ten schedule against Ohio State with a 2:30 p.m. start.
