- The No. 8 Indiana field hockey team came up just short for the first time this season in Big Ten play with a heartbreaking 2-1 overtime loss to No. 11 Iowa at Grant Field in Iowa City. The Hoosiers, now 13-2 overall and 4-1 in the Big Ten, scored first but could not overcome the stingy Hawkeye defense in overtime. The loss marks the end of Indiana's longest winning streak in program history.
Indiana's only score came at the 5:53 mark in the first half when Bashore pushed the ball past Iowa goalkeeper Lissa Munley for her 11th goal of the year. The Hoosiers entered the half with the 1-0 advantage.
The Hawkeyes evened things up five minutes into the second half when Debbie Birrell found Kara Zappone for the goal. Deadlocked at 1-1, the Hoosiers entered overtime for the third time this season. Only eight minutes into extra time, Iowa's Caitlin McCurdy scored the game winning goal to give Iowa the 2-1 victory. Hoosier goalkeeper recorded nine saves, and the IU offense took a total of 10 shots.
Indiana takes the field for the last time at home next weekend with highly-ranked Penn State on Friday, Oct. 28 at 3 p.m. followed by Miami (Ohio) on Sunday at Noon. All matches are played in Mellencamp Pavilion.
