BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 9 Indiana field hockey team rebounded from Friday's loss to shutout Miami (Ohio), 4-0, on senior day in Mellencamp Pavilion. The shutout marks the fifth of the season and ties the program's single-season record set in 2003. Led by sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen's two first-half goals, the Hoosiers improved their overall regular season record to 14-3.
"Being senior day and the last home game of the season, we definitely wanted to head into the Big Tens on a high note," Indiana head coach Amy Robertson said. "We concentrated on playing at a high level after a disappointing loss. I am very proud of this team. The players that came in off the bench gave the same performance as our starters. That depth is a huge advantage of this team."
From start to finish, Indiana dominated the time of possession, taking 16 shots to the RedHawks' six. The Hoosiers got on the board first in the ninth minute after drawing a penalty corner. After the initial shot by senior Mallory Reabold was saved, junior Lydia Schrott was positioned to the left side of the cage to tap the ball in over the top of RedHawk goalkeeper, Megan Stengel.
Two minutes after the score Reabold got an open look at the goal, but her shot was barley saved. Another near miss followed in the next possession when sophomore Kate O'Connell's cross pass to Meeuwsen just missed her.
The Hoosiers raised the score to 2-0 after Meeuwsen broke free for the wide-open cross cage score. Less than three minutes later, Meeuwsen struck again netting her fifth goal of the season off the assist from senior Kayla Bashore. Bashore found Meeuwsen open on the left side of the cage after driving down field and faking out two RedHawk defenders.
With the 3-0 lead at the half, the Hoosiers came out even stronger in the second period, holding Miami (Ohio) to only four shots. The game's final score came in the 54th minute when senior Nikki Orciuch converted a saved shot by O'Connell for her sixth score of the year.
The stingy Hoosier defense held the RedHawks to only six total shots with only four being on goal. In addition, freshman goalkeeper Jobi Manson recorded a career-high two saves. The win marks the 14th win for starting goalkeeper Haley Exner, making the sophomore the winningest goalkeeper in program history.
"Today's win shows how resilient this team is," Bashore said. "We definitely bounced back for our last home game from a very tough loss to Penn State. This being our senior day, we owed it to ourselves to win this game and play hard."
The Hoosiers head to Iowa City, Iowa, for the Big Ten Championship Nov. 4-6. Indiana earned its highest seeding in program history at No.2. IU is set to face Northwestern in the opening game of the tournament on Friday, Nov. 4 at 10:30. Live stats and summaries will be available on IUHOOSIERS.com.
