Sycamores Upset Hoosiers Despite Late Game Push

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. - The No. 16/18 Indiana men's basketball team dropped its second closely-contested game of the season in a 72-67 upset by Indiana State on Dec. 6. Led by freshman Ben Allen's career-high 21 points, seven rebounds and five three-pointers, Indiana finished with three players in double-figure scoring and an impressive 30 bench points. Despite a valiant late-game run, the Hoosiers' record dropped to 4-2 on the season.
Sophomore Robert Vaden got the Hoosiers on the board and off to the early lead with a long three-pointer from the top of the key. Trailing by a point with 12 minutes remaining, Allen shifted the momentum back to Indiana after driving into the lane for the lay up. Allen followed that play with a trey in front of Indiana State bench on the next possession.
For the 17-16 lead, senior Marshall Strickland commanded his way inside to draw the hard foul before draining his first free-throw of the night. Senior Marco Killingsworth put the Hoosiers back on top 20-18 with eight minutes remaining when he converted a lay up into a three-point play. Junior Earl Calloway snapped an 8-0 Indiana State run with a long three with four minutes left in the first stanza. Allen, who was 3-of-3 from beyond the arc in the first half, added three more to give Indiana the lead on the next possession. To end the half, IU held the Sycamores scoreless for the final three minutes of play.
Led by Allen's superb shooting, Indiana battled back from a slow start for the 35-30 midway lead. In the first half, IU tallied 22 of its 35 points in the paint, while Allen led the Hoosiers with 13 points and six rebounds. Additionally, the Hoosier bench put up 18 points to the Sycamore's two.
Determine to make the second half a difference story, the Hoosiers opened the period with a 6-0 run to increase their lead to 11. The Sycamores pulled within two, but senior Lewis Monroe returned possession to the Hoosiers by taking IU's 18th charge of the season. ISU regained the lead with 14:30 left on the clock.
With 12:20 remaining, Allen sank his fourth trey of the game to shorten Indiana State's lead to two. At the seven minute mark, ISU led the Hoosiers by 10, but with five minutes left in the game, Allen cut the Sycamores lead to nine after maneuvering his way inside for the lay up. The next time down the court, Monroe drained a pair of free-throws to pull IU within seven. Vaden narrowed Indiana State's lead by nailing his second three-pointer of the game. Calloway, with a left-handed lay up, cut the Sycamore's lead to two with just under two minutes left in the game.
Down five with a minute remaining in regulation, Killingsworth made the contest a one possession game, scoring off a driving lay up. Able to draw the foul with 40 second on the clock, Strickland sank a pair of free-throws to draw the Hoosiers within one once again.
With time winding down, Calloway drew a foul near midcourt, putting him at the line for two points. After scrambling for the ball, IU was forced to foul sealing their fate as the Hoosiers were unable capitalize on late-game opportunities giving Indiana State the 72-67 upset win.
For the game, Indiana shot 44 percent from the field and tallied 30 bench points. Allen, who had his second-career performance in as many contests, tallied a game-high 21 points, shooting 8-of-10 from the field and 5-of-6 from beyond the arc. The Melbourne, Australia native also recorded career highs in rebounds with seven and three-pointers with five. Despite getting into early foul trouble, Killingsworth scored 10 points and hauled in a team-high eight boards. Vaden, the third Indiana player to score in double figures, netted 12 points and registered a pair of assists.
The Hoosiers return to the hardwood on Dec. 10 against the No. 15/15 Kentucky Wildcats. Game time is slated for 3:45 p.m., at the RCA Dome in Indianapolis. The border rivalry will be televised nationally on CBS.
