BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Hoosiers came out strong in their first test of the 2005 season. Indiana shutout Ball State, 3-0, in Sunday's preseason exhibition at Mellencamp Pavilion.
"We got off to a great start," senior Kayla Bashore, who took five shots on the day, said. "The scrimmage definitely showed us where we need to make improvements. As a team, the game was very smooth. In practice we do a little bit of strategy, so it was good to get out there and actually execute those things we've been working on against a different opponent. Overall, it was a good day, we succeeded in a lot of areas and it felt good."
The Hoosiers, who out-shot the Cardinals 22-2, notched their first of three scores on the afternoon with a goal by sophomore Frederique Meeuwsen off an assist from fellow sophomore Kate O'Connell. The next score came when senior Mallory Reabold converted an assist from 2004 third team All-American Lydia Schrott. Five minutes later, freshman Katie Kiper put another one past Ball State off an assist from sophomore Amanda Oyler.
"I was very pleased with the way the scrimmage went," head coach Amy Robertson said. "I think today served its purpose, and we were able to identify the areas where we need to better organize the team. It was good to have the opportunity to finally compete against someone else. I think we are leaving the scrimmage with a really positive feeling and a lot of confidence. At the same time, now we know where we have to go back in and make adjustments."
The Hoosiers open the fall campaign on Saturday, Aug. 27 at New Hampshire before traveling to Boston to take on Northeastern on Sunday, Aug. 28.
