LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Indiana women's soccer team put together a solid second half against the Southern California Women of Troy, but the defensive hold came too late as the Trojans took a 4-0 lead into half time. IU (0-1-1) is still searching for its first win of the season, while the Trojans (1-1) earn their first victory off the 6-0 match at McAlister Field in Los Angeles, Calif., today.
"We started out with a tough road schedule going to both LMU and USC," head coach Mick Lyon said. "When you take a loss like this one, you have to learn from it. You use this experience to look at the things you did wrong and things you did right, and make the proper adjustments for your next match."
While the Hoosiers were unable to notch a goal in the match, its offense on numerous occasions found its way through the USC defense. Posting a shot for IU were juniors Megan Pipkens and Ali Brown, sophomore Kristin Radcliffe and freshmen Molly Beckwtih, Molly Kruger and Ashley Seib. IU had six shots on the night, while four found their target on goal.
In goal for the Hoosiers were sophomore Stacey Van Boxmeer and senior Lauren Fabbro splitting the match taking a period each.
The Trojans, who offensively came out strong, posted 15 shots on the afternoon, and four saves for sophomore goalie Veronica Simonton.
The Trojans struck early in the 12the and 23rd minute off the feet of junior Rosa Anna Tantillo and freshman Meagan Holmes, respectively. Both Trojan marks came off corner kicks to give USC a 2-0 lead.
USC would finish off the half with goals from freshman Amy Rodriguez and sophomore Lauren Brown in consecutive minutes at the 34:31 and 35:37 marks, respectively, entering the lockeroom with a 4-0 cushion.
"I am pleased with the way we responded during the second half by stepping up our defense," Lyon said. "We had a very spirited effort in the second period and played smarter, which put us back in the game defensively. The score could have easily been 2-2 if we had played the way we did in the second throughout the whole game."
The Hoosiers allowed only two more goals for the Trojans, as Brown found the back of the net in the 74th minute, followed by a goal by Amy Mann in the 81st.
The Hoosiers will be back in action for a pair of Big Ten versus Big 12 matches this weekend. First up for the Indiana is Missouri on Friday, Sept. 2, followed by Iowa State on Sun., Sept. 4. Both matches are set for a 7 p.m. (CST) kickoff.
