BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - It was a tale of two halves for the Indiana women's soccer team tonight, as the Hoosiers caged the Bulldogs of Butler, 2-1, on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium in Bloomington. IU began the first half with just four shots and a goal, but wasted no time in the second period accumulating 14 shots en route to the game winning goal by sophomore forward Kristin Radcliffe.
The win moves IU to 3-3-1 on the season, while Butler falls to 3-4.
"We have been able to score from all different positions on the field," head coach Mick Lyon said, "which has been our goal and game plan from the beginning."
Radcliffe's game-winning mark is her second on the season, and second goal of the 2005 campaign. The Wheaton, Ill., native found the back of the net during one of the Hoosiers' eight corner kicks on the night. Radcliffe received the feed from junior defender Lauren Lamping to finish the play knocking the ball into the right part of the net for the night's deciding goal.
"Our game plan going into this weekend was to win both games and give ourselves a good boost going into Big Ten play next week," Radcliffe said. "We have put ourselves into good position for that with only Bowling Green left to play. I thought we gave ourselves a lot of chances tonight in the second half off corner kicks, and the one ball I scored off was a perfect entry pass. Lamping and I were in the right place and made it count for the score."
The contest began listless in the first half, with both teams struggling to find shot opportunities. The squads were evenly matched in goals and saves with four and two a piece, respectively, while the two entered the locker room in a stalemate at one each.
"After a slow start in the first half, we told the girls they needed to come out and play more soccer in the second," Lyon said. " We have been trying to as a team to become less predictable and more chaotic. The more we play with a chaotic style, being more aggressive, attacking every ball, applying pressure, and increasing our movement, the more we are going to give opponents trouble. That was evident in the second half when we were knocking on the door almost the last 25 minutes of the game."
Senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski notched the Hoosiers first goal of the affair, and her third on the season, off a pair of assists from senior defender Robin Barker and junior midfielder Ali Brown. Junior forward Megan Pipkens orchestrated the goal finding her way near the top-right corner of the Butler box before drawing the foul from her defender. In stepped Ali Brown, who took the fee kick for the Hoosiers, sending the ball in to find Robin Barker ready for the first shot of the game off a header attempt. The Butler goalie, sophomore Annalise Larkin was equal to the task, but the rebound found its way to Zmijewski who finished the job with a goal to the left side of the Butler net.
The Bulldogs tackled the Hoosier lead just six minutes later off a free kick from Angie Muir, whose kick took a Bulldog bounce to pass Hoosier goalie Stacey Van Boxmeer. Butler finished the match with nine saves off the hands of Larkin, six shots on the night coming from four different Bulldog feet and four of those attempts directed at goal.
Hoosiers notables include 18 shots from 11 different shooters, with Pipkens and sophomore Suzie Teixeira leading the way with three each. Van Boxmeer ended with two saves in 45 minutes of action, while Fabbro takes the win for Indiana with one save during the second period.
The Hoosiers conclude their non-conference schedule with a match up against Bowling Green on Sunday, Sept. 18, at Noon.
