BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana field hockey is one step closer to the program's first NCAA Tournament berth with a 3-0 win over Missouri State on Sunday in Mellencamp Pavilion. The Hoosiers improve to 6-1 on the season, and sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner recorded her third shutout win of the season.
"I thought we played a nice game," head coach Amy Robertson said. "We had good possession, but I thought we lacked intensity throughout. I don't think we finished on all the opportunities we created. We should have been able to score more goals in the first half, but I have to give credit to Missouri State. They were really stingy and all over us. They might have given up a lot of corners, but they showed a lot of heart by not letting us get the open shots. Their corner defense did a great job as well."
The first half's only score came from sophomore Kate O'Connell. O'Connell made her way through several Missouri State defenders to nab the assist from freshman Katie Kiper for her first goal of the year.
The Hoosiers dominated the time of possession as evident by their 39 shots. Despite a 19 save effort by Bears' goalkeeper, Kimberly Kinsella, IU tallied two more goals in the second period.
The next score for the Hoosiers came in the 36th minute when senior Mallory Reabold took the tip from junior Morgan Miller and converted the second shot off a penalty corner into a goal. Senior Lesley Wiler struck next off a penalty corner and an assist from Meredith Brown.
The Hoosiers are back in action again next weekend with Big Ten rival Michigan State on Saturday, Sept. 24 at 1 p.m. and Lindenwood on Sunday at 2 p.m.
