IU Falls to Oklahoma in First Match of Bama Bash

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. - The Indiana volleyball squad struggled in its road opener against Oklahoma at the Bama Bash in Tuscaloosa, Ala. After battling in a tightly-contested opening game, the Hoosiers fell to OU, 3-0, in the end. The loss dropped IU to 1-2, while Oklahoma improved to 2-0.
Even though Indiana had a tough time penetrating Oklahoma's stalwart defense during the match, the Hoosiers countered with a stout presence at the net. In sum, IU posted 10 total team blocks with one block solo and 18 block assists.
Sophomore middle blocker Annie Moddrell and senior outside hitter Rachel Gerling led with a match-high five total blocks each, while senior middle blocker Mandy Eberle followed close behind with four of her own. Additionally, Gerling notched a team-high nine digs.
Offensively, freshman outside hitter Erica Short paced Indiana with 11 kills, while freshman setter Laura Holm notched 22 assists in the three-game affair.
The match jumped out to a thrilling start as the teams accounted for five lead changes and nine ties in a game that did not fall IU's way, 30-28. With the win, OU led 1-0.
Falling in such heartbreaking fashion in the first game for the second match in a row might have bothered the Hoosiers, as they went on to lose 30-20 and 30-22 in the final two stanzas. Although, Indiana did make Oklahoma work in the third frame with five lead changes and eight ties.
Indiana continues the Bama Bash tonight against host Alabama at 7 p.m.
