BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - One day after upsetting No. 6 Michigan State in double overtime, the Hoosiers took the field against NAIA foe Lindenwood. The 6-0 win improves Indiana's home record to 5-0 in 2005. Senior Kayla Bashore scored her second hat trick of the season and her career with three consecutive first half goals against the Lions. Also scoring for Indiana was junior Morgan Miller, freshman Katie Kiper and senior Mallory Reabold. The stifling IU defense recorded its fourth shutout win of the season and held Lindenwood to only six shots.
"I thought we put together two good games this weekend," Indiana head coach Amy Robertson said. "We created a lot of opportunities today and maybe we are a little disappointed we didn't score more, but it was a good win. I thought we executed well, we passed the ball a lot and we played pretty honest defense. It's pretty tough to come back after the biggest victory you've had and play the game we did today. Yesterday's game went into overtime and we experienced some really serious fatigue. We stepped up and were able to use this game to help us prepare for our upcoming games."
The Hoosiers' scoring run began early when Bashore slapped the ball past Lions' goalkeeper Jennica Albertson at the four minute mark to put Indiana on the board early. Bashore continued to lead the Indiana offense with a goal in the 16th minute off the assist from midfielder Rachel Telian. For the natural hat trick, Bashore notched her third goal of the game and her eighth this season. The goal, which came off a penalty corner, was assisted by Meredith Brown and Frederique Meeuwsen. The final score in the first half came in the 33rd minute off a penalty corner by Miller. Miller, who took ten shots on the day, recorded her third goal of the season off the assist from Amanda Oyler.
Indiana continued its strong play in the second half as the Hoosiers maintained possession for the majority of the game. Less than a minute into the period, Kiper netted her first career goal as a Hoosier off the assist from Meredith Brown. The game's final score came from Reabold who drove the ball unassisted for the 6-0 lead and win.
Freshman goalkeeper Jobi Manson saw action for the first time today and recorded Indiana's only save of the day.
"We had two good wins this weekend," Bashore said. "We knew it was important to play a good game today after yesterday's victory over Michigan State because we proved we can still play at the same level. I was able to connect on my shots today and we are happy with another win."
The Hoosiers hit the road to continue the Big Ten season with Michigan on Friday, Sept. 30 at 4 p.m. in Ann Arbor, followed by Kent State in Kent, Ohio in Sunday, Oct. 2. IU returns home to face Northwestern on Saturday, Oct. 8 at 1 p.m. in Mellencamp Pavilion.
