BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team just had more heart today as it downed the visiting No. 22-ranked Wolverines of Michigan, 2-1, Friday night on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers, which took the lead early in the first, were outshot 20-14, while Michigan also held the advantage 9-4 on corners, but IU would not be stopped in the victory.
"We had three keys to the game we wanted to execute well," head coach Mick Lyon said. "The first was defending on set plays and then to compete for headers. We did both of those great tonight. The final key to the game was to play with more heart. If we did not have the heart, then the rest of the game would not fall into place."
The win moves the Hoosiers to 5-5-1 on the season, 1-2 Big Ten, while dropping the Wolverines to 5-3-2 overall and 1-1 in conference.
Senior midfielder Kristen Zmijewski continued to show her spirit and heart, netting the game's first notch in the 28th minute of action. While the goal garnered no official assist, the scoring set began on the feet of junior forward Megan Pipkens. The Holt, Mich., native sent the ball on a cross to find no Hoosier on the receiving end for the immediate shot. Freshman Molly Kruger, who finished the game with four shots, tracked down the loose ball on the near side and fired in a second cross of the set. A Michigan defender stepped in to break up the ensuing play, heading the ball out into the thankful feet of Zmijewski who sent the ball in the back of the net. The score is her fourth of the season, and 12th of her career.
The Wolverines matched the Hoosier goal in the 36th minute off a notch from sophomore Jamie Artsis. Junior Judy Coffman served the ball off the free kick opportunity on the far side to setup Artsis for the equalizer in the right side of the net.
Indiana finished the period tied, with sophomore Stacey Van Boxmeer wrapping up goalie duties with two saves in the first. Senior Lauren Fabbro took the helm of the Hoosier goal in the second period finishing with six saves in the effort, while tallying her fourth victory of the 2005 campaign.
Sophomore forward Kristin Radcliffe concluded the Hoosiers' scoring agenda in the 68th minute off a makeshift play from midfield. Pipkens setup the play by passing the ball back to sophomore Jenna Babcock who made her way up the field. Babcock looked to attack quickly, sending in the pass to the charging Radcliffe. The serve found its target in Radcliffe, who notched her third goal of the season as she shot the ball in the near side of the net, giving the Hoosiers the win and the game's final score.
"The ball was an amazing pass from Babcock," Radcliffe said. "It was setup by Pipkens, and Babcock just delivered. Overall, we needed this win today. We have lost some unlucky games this season, but today we just came out with more heart and looking to win the first ball every time."
IU's defense, while facing 20 shots from the Wolverines, kept its composure against the aggressive Michigan midfielders and forwards.
"Our defense held strong today and really showed some heart," Babcock said. "Everyone was supporting each other and we did everything right from defending on corners to backing the other backs up. We worked a lot this week on defending the set plays, and it paid off today. When it comes down to it, this game was not about the fancy footwork or the skill level, but all about heart. We were winning the headers, staying aggressive in every touch of the ball, and executed our game plan of running them off the field."
The Hoosiers will look to conclude its state of Michigan sweep as they meet the Michigan State Spartans on Sunday for a noon affair at Armstrong Stadium.
