AMES, Iowa. - The Indiana women's soccer team came away with a couple of firsts in its 1-0 win on the road in Ames, Iowa, against Iowa State (1-2-1) on Sunday afternoon. At the ISU Soccer Complex, freshmen Molly Beckwith and Molly Kruger showed why they are newcomers to watch this season as they team up for IU's first goal and win of the season.
"I am very happy for the team," head coach Mick Lyon said. "From the first to the last kick we remained aggressive and looked sharp on the field. We changed our formation a little, which resulted in us becoming dangerous the entire match on the offensive end."
The Hoosiers' (1-2-1) goal came at the 37th minute, with Beckwtih breaking towards goal and receiving the dish from Kruger to cap off the play.
Multiple Hoosiers were a part of the aggressive effort that saw Indiana outshoot the Cyclones 13 to 4 on the day. Registering shots in the highly competitive performance were seniors Kristen Zmijewski (1) and Robin Barker (1), juniors Ali Brown (1), Carrie DeFreece (2 on goal) and Megan Pipkens (1), sophomores Lauren Lamping (1 on goal), Beverly Markwort (1) and Lindsay McCarthy (1).
Beckwith finished the match with two shots and one goal on the day, while fellow midfielder Kruger fired off two shots, one on goal, and one assist in the win.
The stats sheet also favored the Hoosiers with five corner kicks to just two for the Cyclones.
The victory could not have happened without the performance of IU's backs that held the Cyclones to only four shots on the afternoon.
ISU, a team who scored one goal against Purdue off 19 shots in its previous match, only came close to finding the Hoosier net twice during the course of 90 minutes. The defensive stand was highlighted by the core defense of Markwort, Barker, senior Courtney O'Bryan and Lamping.
ISU's two scoring chances came off the shots of freshman Meghan Smith and sophomore Erin Witte. Smith started the Cyclone scoring attempt early at the 00:54 mark of the first half that was broken up by the IU defense. The second and last shot on goal for Iowa State came 53 minutes later, a shot that senior Lauren Fabbro handled to claim her only save on the night.
Fabbro debuted her first start for the Hoosiers and manned all 90 minutes of the contest in goal. For the Cyclones, sophomore Joanna Haig took the goalie responsibilities, racking up four saves and allowing the eventual game-winning goal.
The Hoosiers will make their first home appearance next week on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium hosting the Hoosier Classic Sept. 9-11. The Classic will feature matches against Miami on Friday, Sept. 9, at 7 p.m., followed by a match against Xavier on Sunday, Sept. 11, at 11 a.m., in Bloomington, Ind. The other Classic match will host Marquette and Xavier going head-to-head on Friday at 5 p.m.
