BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana field hockey team came out strong and never looked back in Friday's 6-0 win over Pacific. The shutout victory for the Hoosiers improved its record to 4-1. In the dominant IU win, senior Kayla Bashore scored the season and program's second hat trick with three goals. Senior Mallory Reabold netted two scores and junior Lydia Schrott contributed one in the win.
From start to finish the Hoosiers were strong on both sides of the ball. Holding the Tigers to only seven shots, sophomore goalkeeper Haley Exner saved all seven in the team's first shutout of the season.
"We had a great game today," head coach Amy Robertson said. "We did a good job on finishing on the opportunities we created. It's really fun when you are able to get people off the bench and you don't lose a step. The girls that came off the bench stepped it up in energy and performance, and we are really happy with everyone on this team today. Haley (Exner) played fantastic. Pacific found some gaps and were able to come through and attack, but Haley made the saves and earned the shutout that she got today."
"It was great to be at home, and we showed that we came to play today," Bashore said. "We knew we had to take it to them and we did."
The first half belonged to Bashore and the Hoosiers. The recent USA National Team selection scored in the 21st minute off a penalty corner with assists from junior Morgan Miller and sophomore Meredith Brown. Bashore struck again in the 32nd minute off the assist from Reabold.
Indiana continued to dominate in the second half with another four goals and 10 shots. The scoring continued when Reabold, who tallied five points for the day, put one past Tiger goalkeeper Valerie Niles off the assist from fellow senior Lesley Wiler, for her first score of the season. IU's next goal came from career goals leader Schrott, followed by Reabold's second score of the day.
In the 65th minute, Bashore registered the second hat trick in program history scoring off a penalty corner. Wiler notched her second assist of the game, while sophomore Amanda Oyler earned the other.
"We are really excited that Kayla (Bashore) had a hat trick tonight," Robertson said. "We don't get those often because we share the ball. It was great to see a midfielder get those kinds of scoring results."
Indiana, on its quest for the program's first ever birth in the NCAA Tournament, continues to break Hoosier records. The team earned a single-game high six assists, and Bashore tied Schrott for single-game goals (3) and points (6) record. The win over Pacific marks the 14th consecutive game in which the Hoosiers have scored.
Indiana continues its five game home stand with Ohio on Saturday, Sept. 17 at 1 p.m., followed by Missouri State the next day at 1 p.m.
