Hoosiers Unstoppable in Season-Opening Doubleheader

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team opened the 2006 season with a pair of victories over Miami (Ohio) and Western Michigan on Jan. 15 at the Varsity Tennis Center. The No. 32 ranked Hoosiers swept the RedHawks, 7-0, in the morning match before defeating the No. 54 ranked Broncos, 5-2, in the afternoon. For the day, IU was victorious in all seven doubles matches and won 13 of 16 in singles play.
"I thought for our first matches we played really well," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "I think today's matches will keep us focused. Next week, we will face a very good Kansas team. Today helped give us a good perspective on what we need to do to get better."
Senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan kicked off the match against Miami (Ohio) with a dominating, 8-0, doubles win in the No. 1 slot over Katrina Lomidze and Linda Jirouskova. The Hoosiers' No. 2 doubles combination of sophomore Brianna Williams and freshman Sigrid Fischer defeated Miami's Victoria Pulido and Remy Swain by a score of 8-2. In the closest doubles match against the RedHawks, junior Cecile Perton and freshman Alba Berdala beat Kelly Douple and Leda Pesatova, 8-5, to overwhelmingly claim the doubles point for IU.
Freshmen Stephanie Heller and Marah Calvo collected a win over the RedHawks in exhibition action. The pair topped Miami's Christy Scardina and Maura Trauernict, 8-3.
Against the RedHawks in singles, Williams stepped off the court first after sweeping Miami's Douple, 6-0, 6-0. The victory is Williams' first of her career at the No. 3 spot. At No. 1 singles, Batty topped Lomidze by a score of 6-2, 6-0, marking her fourth career win at the No. 1 singles position.
In No. 2 singles, McGaffigan convincingly defeated Leda Pesatova, 6-0, 6-1. Berdala refused to drop the second set winning 6-2, 7-5 at No. 4 singles for her first career dual singles win. In the No. 5 singles battle, Perton topped Swain by a score of 6-1, 6-3, while Fischer recorded her first dual singles win over Maura Trauernicht in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1 in the No. 6 slot for the first team win of the 2006 campaign.
In singles exhibition play against the RedHawks, Heller beat Christy Scardina, 6-3, 6-3.
In the day's second match against No. 54 Western Michigan, the Hoosiers earned the doubles point claiming all three doubles matches. At the No. 1 position against the Broncos, Batty and McGaffigan earned their second win of the day over Malena Remynse and Rattiya Hiranrat, 8-3. Fischer and Williams, in the No. 2 slot, followed suit by defeating Carrie Jeanmaire and Kerstin-Beeke Pahl by the same score to clinch the doubles point for Indiana.
In the final doubles showdown of the day, Berdala and Perton battled it out with WMU's Reedhina Parekh and Noriko Saruta for an 8-6 win.
Batty, who played two matches in the No. 1 singles spot, topped Western Michigan's Remynse in a dominating 6-0, 6-1 win. Williams, who played at the No. 4 position against the Broncos, picked up a victory over Priyanka Parekh, 6-3, 6-1. McGaffigan took home her second singles win of the day besting Jeanmaire, 6-4, 6-3.
At No. 6 singles, Perton was tied at two in the tiebreaker match with WMU's Saruta before retiring to give Western Michigan their first singles win and point of the match.
In a hard fought battle at the No. 3 slot, Berdala dropped a tiebreaker match to R. Hiranrat, 3-6, 6-2, 1-0(8). Fischer, who played No. 5 singles against the Broncos, won her closely contested match, 7-5, 7-6.
Heller picked up another win in exhibition matches against Western Michigan opponent. Heller defeated Mead in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4. Against WMU's Pahl, Calvo fell in the tiebreaker set, 3-6, 7-5, 1-0(3).
The Hoosiers are back in action at the Varsity Tennis Center on Sunday, Jan. 22. IU will face Kansas at 10 a.m.
