BLOOMINGTON, Ind.- The Indiana women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought match to No. 14 Duke on Jan. 28 at the Indiana Tennis Center. Despite several close matches, the No. 32 ranked Hoosiers fell to the Blue Devils, 6-1. IU dropped to 3-1 while Duke improved to 2-0. Indiana will take on Ball State at 3 p.m. in the second half of the day's doubleheader.
"I was pleased with the way we played Duke today," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We were competitive in a lot of matches. Except No. 1 doubles, we were leading at some point in the other two doubles matches. Duke will no doubt be a Final Four team this year. If we can play at the level we did today for the rest of the season, it will really bode well for us. Today gave us a lot of confidence. We now know we can play with the top teams in the country."
Senior Sarah Batty and partner junior Laura McGaffigan suffered their first doubles loss of the season to No. 10 ranked Daniela Bercek and Jessi Robinson. Batty and McGaffigan rebounded from a slow start before battling to win two sets before Bereck and Robinson pulled away for the 8-2 win. The highly-ranked Duke pair is the first ranked doubles opponent Batty and McGaffigan have faced this season.
In No. 2 doubles, sophomore Brianna Williams and freshman Sigrid Fischer traded sets before Duke's No. 41 Jennifer Zika and Melissa Mang won the match, 8-5 to secure the doubles points.
Junior Cecile Perton and freshman Alba Berdala began the match down 3-1 before winning three straight sets in the No. 3 slot against Kristin Cargill and Jackie Carleton. Duke tied the score at 4-4 before pulling away to claim the 8-4 win.
In singles, Batty jumped to the early 3-0 lead in the first game at No. 1 singles against No. 6 Bereck but eventually lost the hard-fought match 6-4, 6-1.
McGaffigan, facing her first ranked opponent in Carleton, dropped a back-and-fourth first set that ended in a tie breaker at No. 2 singles. Down 5-0 in the second game, the Davenport, Iowa product rallied to tighten the score to 5-3. Despite the late-game momentum shift, McGaffigan could not hang on and lost the match 7-5, 6-3.
Williams, the only IU winner against the Blue Devils, improved her perfect individual record with an impressive straight-set win over Cargill, 6-3, 6-3. In the No. 4 singles slot, Berdala fell to Mang, 6-1, 6-1.
At the No. 6 singles position, Perton lost the first set, 6-2. Despite fighting hard in the second, the Briey, France native lost the match, 6-2, 7-5. In the only three-set match of the day, Robinson edged Fischer at No. 5 singles, 7-5, 5-7, 1-0(7).
