BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Kelsey Hans scored the game's only goal in the 27th minute, as Northwestern (8-7-1, 4-3-1 Big Ten) topped Indiana 1-0 on Sunday, Oct. 15, at Armstrong Stadium. The loss ended IU's 13-game unbeaten streak, with the last loss coming to Creighton on Aug. 27 at the Wisconsin Soccer Invitational.
Northwestern got on the board at 26:57 on Hans' sixth goal of the season. Laura Jonawitsch sent a cross from the right side deep into the box, and Hans redirected the shot off Stacey Van Boxmeer and into the back of the net to give NU a 1-0 lead.
The Hoosiers had a golden opportunity to tie the score in the 41st minute when Megan Pipkens was dragged down in the box and the referee awarded IU a penalty kick. Kelly Lawrence lined up for the PK and blistered a shot to the lower left corner, but Lauren Johnston made a diving stop. Lawrence jumped on the rebound, but her second shot deflected off Johnston and the score remained 1-0 Wildcats.
Indiana had a pair of strong opportunities in the final three minutes on corner kicks by Ali Brown. Brown found Jessica Boots near the back post on the first opportunity, but the freshman sent a header high over the crossbar. With under a minute to play, Brown tried the same play, and this time Christie Kotynski's header sailed wide of the net.
Indiana returns to action next weekend, as it takes to the road for Big Ten contests against Iowa and Illinois. Game time for Friday's match against the Hawkeyes is 8 p.m. EDT, while the Hoosiers face the Fighting Illini at 2 p.m. EDT on Sunday.
