BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University volleyball team fell to Illinois, 3-1 (30-26, 24-30, 16-30, 20-30), on Saturday evening in University Gym. With the loss, the Hoosiers fall to 10-12 overall and 1-9 in the Big Ten while the Illini are now 13-7 overall and 4-6 in the conference.
"We were aggressive early, but they did a better job of ball-handling," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "We had a lot of miscommunication on the serve, and that hurt us."
The Hoosiers started out hot in the first frame, taking a quick 10-5 lead. That advantage grew to 14 points at 20-6 on a kill by Erica Short, and IU would keep the lead and take the game, 30-26, despite a late hard charge by Illinois.
The second game was close from the beginning, with the two teams trading points back and forth. The score was tied seven times before the Illini took the lead back for good at 18-17. The Hoosiers tried to close the advantage, but Illinois took the game by a score of 30-24.
It was all Illini from the start of the third frame. Illinois took the early lead, and that lead grew to ten points at 16-6. The Illini took the game, 30-16.
Despite the two teams keeping it close in the early moments of the fourth game, Illinois went on a 7-3 run to open up an eight-point lead at 22-14. The Illini held on to take the game, and the match, 30-20.
Leading the way for the Hoosiers was Short, who picked up a double double with 16 kills and 10 digs. Juli Pierce paced the Hoosiers defensively with 20 digs while Allison Regas had one solo block and five block assists. Indiana out-blocked Illinois, 10-5, on the match.
Kylie McCulley paced five Illini with double-digit kills, tallying 22 in the match. Lizzie Bazzetta had 66 assists for the Illini while Ashley Edinger picked up 21 digs.
The Hoosiers will be in action next on Wednesday, Oct. 25, when they travel to West Lafayette, Ind., to take on Purdue. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
