Hoosiers Drop Monon Spike Match At Purdue, 3-0

WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana volleyball team was defeated by No. 13 Purdue, 3-0 (30-21, 30-22, 30-19), on Wednesday, Oct. 25, at Purdue's Intercollegiate Athletic Facility. Indiana is now 10-13 on the season with a 1-10 mark in the Big Ten, while the Boilermakers improve to 18-4 overall with a 7-2 record in the conference. With the win, Purdue captured the annual Monon Spike match for the fourth consecutive season.
Purdue took the early 4-2 lead in the first game, but the Hoosiers came back to knot the score at 8-8 on a block by Allison Regas, Gabrielle Allison and Erica Short. However, the Boilermakers then rattled off three-straight points to take back the lead and held that advantage through the remainder of the game. The second game was controlled by Purdue from the beginning, and the Boilermakers out-hit the Hoosiers, .371-.182, in the game.
The Hoosiers opened up the third game red hot, with a kill by Short and a block by Annie Moddrell and Regas putting IU up 2-0. However, with Purdue leading 9-7, the Boilermakers went on a 9-0 run to take a 18-7 lead and never looked back.
The Hoosiers were led by Short's 22 kills while Emily Zulauf added seven of her own. Juli Pierce led the Hoosiers on defense with nine digs and Short picked up eight. Regas and Allison each led the Hoosiers with two block assists.
Stephanie Lynch led the Boilermakers with 13 kills on the match. Samantha Mader and Danita Merlau each tallied 11 kills in the Purdue win, with Merlau also leading the team with nine digs. Elizabeth Jacques had one solo block and five block assists for the Boilermakers as well.
Indiana returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 28 when it hosts Iowa in University Gym. Match time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
