BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana volleyball team was defeated by Iowa, 3-0 (30-23, 30-25, 30-20), on Saturday, Oct. 28, in University Gym. Indiana is now 10-14 on the season with a 1-11 mark in the Big Ten, while the Hawkeyes improved to 13-11 with a 2-10 record in conference play.
"Iowa definitly came to play," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "Their setter did a really nice job of setting and keeping the tempo of the offense. We had a couple of players struggle defensively, and Iowa capitalized on that. Our offense was slow and our passing is not where it needs to be."
IU held an early lead in the opening frame at 4-3 on an Iowa error and held onto that lead until Alicia Johnson picked up a service ace for Iowa to tie the score at 10-10. An Indiana error gave the Hawkeyes the 11-10 advantage. Although a kill by Erica Short tied it up again, this time at 11-11, Iowa then went on a 6-0 run to open up a six-point advantage at 17-11 and never looked back. Iowa closed out the game, 30-23, then took the second, 30-25, and closed out the match in the third at 30-20. Iowa out-hit the Hoosiers, .258 to .135 for the match.
The Hoosiers were led by Juli Pierce's 20 digs on defense, while Lauren Ditteon chipped in 13 and Caitlin Watts added 12 of her own. Short led IU offensively with 13 kills and was followed by Annie Moddrell, who tallied nine. Watts and Sara Diehl each also had one service ace apiece.
Iowa had three players in double-figures in kills, led by Catherine Smale with 14. Kiley Fister had 44 assists for the Hawkeyes while Smale also led Iowa defensively with 25 digs to lead three players in double-figures in that category as well.
Indiana returns to action on Friday, Nov. 3, when it travels to Columbus, Ohio, for a matchup with Ohio State. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
