EVANSVILLE, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team staved off a hard-fought effort from Evansville to earn a 1-0 victory at Black Beauty Field on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Lindsay McCarthy scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute, and Stacey Van Boxmeer earned her fifth shutout of the season, as the Hoosiers improved to 8-2-3 with the victory and increased their unbeaten streak to 11 games.
McCarthy put the Hoosiers on the board at 17:57 off a cross from Carrie DeFreece. DeFreece took the ball up the right side and sent a ball to the front of the net. The ball deflected off McCarthy, who then spun and knocked a right-footed shot just inside the near post for her second goal of the season.
Megan Pipkens had a strong opportunity to make the score 2-0 with just five minutes to play in the half, but a brilliant play by Evansville keeper Whitney Raeon. After a scramble at the top of the 18, Pipkens found herself alone with the ball in front of the defense, but Raeon made a sliding block to keep the ball out of the net.
The Hoosiers outshot the Purple Aces 13-7 in the game. Raeon made five saves to Van Boxmeer's one in the contest.
Earlier in the day, defender Jenna Babcock was named to the SoccerBuzz.com Elite Team of the Week, the first time she has earned that honor.
Indiana will face No. 13 Penn State on Sunday, Oct. 8, at noon at Armstrong Stadium. First place in the Big Ten will be on the line for the contest, as IU enters the game with a 4-0-0 conference record, its best Big Ten start in program history.
