BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana volleyball team was defeated by Michigan State, 3-0 (30-20, 30-27, 30-22), on Friday, Nov. 10, in University Gym. Indiana is now 10-17 on the season with a 1-14 mark in the Big Ten, while the Spartans improved to 16-9 with a 7-8 record in conference play. The match was televised on Comcast SportsNet Chicago and will be shown on tape delay on Nov. 11 at 4 p.m. ET.
"Michigan State has two of the top outsides in the Big Ten," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "We didn't have an answer for them. Their offense did a very nice job. We had a hard time defensively and that took us out of it on offense."
The Spartans controlled the first game, closing it out at 30-20. In the second frame, The Hoosiers took an early 5-2 lead on a kill by Erica Short and held onto that advantage until a Michigan State kill put the score at 9-8 in favor of the Spartans. However, IU battled back to tie the score, this time at 16-16. The two teams then traded points back and forth, with the Hoosiers chipping away at the Michigan State lead. It stayed within two points for much of the remainder of the game, but a kill by Katie Johnson gave Michigan the game, 30-27. The Spartans also took the third stanza, 30-22.
The Hoosiers were led by Short with 12 kills. She also had one solo block and three block assists in the match as well as three digs. Gabrielle Allison had seven kills for IU while picking up three digs and recording one solo block and two block assists. Defensively, Sara Diehl and Juli Pierce each had five digs for the Hoosiers.
Michigan State had three players finish in double figures, led by Johnson with 23 kills. She also had one solo block and two block assists in the match. Ashley Schatzle finished with 16 kills for the Spartans and Jessica Hohl added 13. Nicole Colaluca had 13 digs to lead Michigan State defensively while Miken Trogdon tallied 10.
Indiana returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 11, when it plays host to Michigan in University Gym. Match time is slated for 7 p.m.
