BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - In front of a raucous crowd of 42,320, the Indiana football team dropped to 5-6 overall and 3-4 in the Big Ten after a 34-3 loss to No. 2/2 Michigan at Memorial Stadium on Nov. 11. The Wolverines improved their record to 11-0 overall and 7-0 in conference play.
Michigan opened the contest with back-to-back touchdowns, claiming the 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter. U-M quarterback Chad Henne found wide receiver Adrian Arrington on a one-yard pass for the Wolverines' first score at the 10:22 mark of the opening quarter, while running back Mike Hart's four-yard run accounted for Michigan's second touchdown with 4:30 left.
The Hoosiers got on the board with 11:30 remaining in the second quarter, as sophomore kicker Austin Starr punched a 39-yard field goal through the uprights to shorten Michigan's lead to 14-3. Highlights of the 14-play, 52-yard drive included an 11-yard pass from Kellen Lewis to Ray Fisher and an eight-yard reception by James Hardy on fourth down and two from the Wolverine 31.
On the ensuing possession, the Wolverines struck again on a 62-yard pass from Henne to wide receiver Steve Breaston for the 21-3 advantage.
IU was forced to punt on the ensuing possession, and the Hoosier defense rose to the occasion. Michigan drove to the Indiana 35-yard line, but sophomore defensive tackle Greg Brown sacked Henne for a one-yard loss. On third and 13 from the 36, Henne completed a 22-yard strike to tight end Tyler Ecker. Jerome Jackson was held with out a yard on first down, and Leslie Majors followed with an interception in the end zone. This marked Majors' first career interception.
Marcus Thigpen returned the second half kickoff 38 yards to the Hoosier 46-yard line. IU drove to the Michigan 45, but a 10-yard holding penalty bumped the Hoosiers back to their own 45. On third and 11, Lewis was sacked for a 10-yard loss. The Wolverines' Steve Breaston returned Tyson Beattie's punt 83 yards for a touchdown, and Garrett Rivas' extra point made it 28-3. Jerome Jackson closed out the third quarter scoring with a one-yard touchdown run for the final margin.
Freshman linebacker Will Patterson had a career-high 10 tackles for the Hoosiers, who close the regular season with the annual Old Oaken Bucket Game against rival Purdue on Nov. 18 in West Lafayette, Ind. Game time is slated for noon EST and will be shown live on ESPN Classic.
