Hoosiers Fall At Illinois, 3-1

CHAMPAIGN, Ill. - Despite taking the first game, the Hoosiers fell to Illinois, 3-1 (30-20, 13-30, 17-30, 23-30) on Friday, Nov. 17. The Hoosiers are now 10-19 on the season and 1-16 in the Big Ten while Illinois improves to 15-12 overall and is 6-11 in the conference.
The Hoosiers opened the match by taking the early 5-4 lead in the first game. Indiana held onto an advantage throughout the remainder of the match, including being up by 11 at one point. Three consecutive errors by the Illini gave the Hoosiers the 30-20 victory in the game.
Illinois controlled both the second game, 30-13, and the third game, 30-17, before IU kept it close in the fourth game. The two teams traded points back and forth throughout much of the opening moments of the frame, but Illinois took a four point lead at 12-8 midway through the game. The Hoosiers could not cut that advantage down to anything less than three points for the remainder of the game, which Illinois took, 30-23.
Erica Short led the Hoosiers with 14 kills in the match. She also had two digs and three block assists in the loss for IU. Lauren Ditteon also tallied eight kills for the Hoosiers while picking up five digs and three block assists while Annie Moddrell recorded eight kills of her own to go along with four block assists. Juli Pierce led the Hoosiers on the defensive side with 18 digs while Gabrielle Allison had five block assists in the match.
Vicki Brown and Kyle McCulley each tallied 15 kills to lead the Illini. Meghan Macdonald had 12 kills while Amy Palash added 10 for Illinois. Brown also had three solo blocks and nine block assists in the match. Macdonald also had just 12 attempts for a perfect 1.000 hitting percentage in the match. Ashley Edinger led four players with double-digit digs with 27 total.
The Hoosiers will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 19, when they travel to Evanston, Ill., to take on Northwestern. Match time is set for 8 p.m. ET.
