UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. - The Indiana women's soccer team got the game's first goal in the 16th minute, but Michigan rallied for two straight tallies to take a 2-1 decision on Thursday, Nov. 2, at Jeffrey Field. Indiana (9-7-4, 5-4-1 Big Ten) will be seeking an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament, while Michigan (9-6-5, 4-3-3) will face host Penn State on Friday, Nov. 3, in the second round.
The Hoosiers got on the board in the 16th minute on an own goal. Lauren Lamping sent a ball in from 30 yards out along the right side, and Michigan defender Amy Klippert attempted to head the ball clear, but it ricocheted toward the near post and carried just out of the reach of goalkeeper Megan Tuura.
The goal immediately followed a skirmish in which Lindsay McCarthy narrowly missed giving IU a 1-0 lead. After shaking loose from her defender, McCarthy turned around and unleashed a right-footed shot toward the far post. The ball dipped toward the goal, clipped the crossbar and then hit the post. Carrie DeFreece attempted to chase down the rebound, but could not catch up to the ball in time.
At 19:26, the Wolverines gained redemption with an own goal to their credit. Michigan sent a ball into the box where Lamping gave chase. Lamping turned and tried to clear the ball with her left foot, but the ball squirted off the side of her foot and just out of the reach of Stacey Van Boxmeer to make the score 1-1.
Michigan took the lead at 28:18 off a corner kick. Judy Coffman bent a ball toward the front, where Jessica Boots headed it to the far side, but the ball carried to a wide-open Lindsey McDonald, who wound up and lofted a shot high to the far side. The shot carried just out of Van Boxmeer's reach and into the upper corner for the first goal of the junior's career.
Indiana got a pair of strong opportunities to tie the score in the 75th minute, both involving freshman Liz Holby. On the first play, Holby received the ball off a free kick and sent a pass to Kristin Arnold on the near side. Arnold redirected the pass to McCarthy and Tuura made a diving stop. Less than a minute later, Holby tried to cross the ball to McCarthy again, and the pass redirected just wide of the near post.
The Hoosiers will be eligible for an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament. The field of 64 will be selected on Monday, Nov. 6.
