BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Two Hoosiers scored in double figures as Indiana defeated Ball State, 71-57, on Branch McCracken Court in Assembly Hall on Saturday, Dec. 30. The win closes out the Hoosiers' non-conference schedule and improves IU's record at home to 7-0.
Junior D.J. White netted 16 points as he sank 7-of-10 from the field and 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Senior Roderick Wilmont scored 12 points and added a team-high seven rebounds.
Down by five, 16-11, with 12:25 remaining in the first half, the Hoosiers (9-3) put together a 23-6 run sparked by an Armon Bassett layup at the 12:08 mark to take a 34-22 lead into the break. Indiana's run included 12 unanswered points in the final 6:17 of the half.
IU increased its lead to 15, 43-28, within the first four and half minutes of the second stanza. The Hoosiers held Ball State (4-9) to just six field goals over an eight-minute period while increasing their lead to 60-42 with 7:32 remaining in the game. Despite a 15-12 Cardinal run late in the half, Indiana maintained at least a 14-point advantage en route to a 71-57 victory.
The Hoosiers opened the first half with a monster dunk from White to take a 2-0 lead within the first 30 seconds, only to see it disappear as Ball State's Peyton Stovall sank a 3-pointer at the 19-minute mark to give the Cardinals an early one-point advantage. A three-point play by A.J. Ratliff regained a two-point lead for the Hoosiers, 5-3, at the 18:41 mark. However, a 13-6 Cardinal run gave Ball State it 16-11 lead with 12:25 remaining in the first half.
Indiana shot 43.1 percent (25-of-86) from the field and 70.0 percent (14-of-20) from the free throw line (14-of-20) while holding Ball State to 38.6 percent (22-of-57) shooting from the floor. The Cardinals held a 38-35 advantage on the boards, but Indiana's bench outscored the Cardinals, 21-1.
Three scored in double digits for the Cardinals as Anthony Newell scored a team-best 16 points. He added a game-high 11 rebounds, seven of which came on the defensive end. Skip Mills sank 5-of-11 from the field and 5-of-9 from the free throw line for 15 points, and Stovall scored 15 points as he hit 6-of-7 from the field and 3-of-4 from the 3-point line.
The Hoosiers return to action on Tuesday, Jan. 2 when they visit No. 6 Ohio State. The game against the Buckeyes will be televised on ESPN and is slated to tip off at 8 p.m. EST.
