BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team rounded out a perfect weekend of play on Feb. 12 against in-state foe Butler. The No. 32 Hoosiers blanked the Bulldogs, 7-0, at the Indiana Tennis Center. The 7-0 win marks the third time this season IU has held an opponent scoreless and improved IU's record to 7-1 overall.
"At this point in the season, we are where we want to be," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We are still experimenting, but from a conditioning standpoint we are in good shape. We played really hard this weekend. I thought the DePaul score was a little deceiving. They played us hard and it could have easily been 4-3. Sarah (Batty) had a really great win at No. 1 singles against them. Brianna (Williams) and Sigrid (Fischer) are playing really well right now. Brianna is still unbeaten in singles, and Sigrid has only lost one match in a three-setter against Duke. We are really looking forward to this upcoming weekend and some great matches."
Like in the morning match against DePaul, Indiana won the doubles point by winning all three matches. Freshman Sigrid Fischer and sophomore Brianna Williams won easily at the No. 2 slot with a score of 8-0 against Michelle Hawes and Kaitlin Elliot.
The No. 3 doubles combination of freshman Alba Berdala and junior Cecile Perton topped Ashley Harrison and Chelsey Casperson, 8-1, to secure the doubles point for the fourth-straight time. The last pair to step off the court was senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan. The No. 37-ranked pair topped Butler's Alaina Griffin and Tayo Bailey, 8-3.
Like doubles, the Hoosiers swept all six singles matches. Fischer was the first to come off the court with a win. Fischer blanked Elliott, 6-0, 6-0, at No. 4 singles. In her second singles appearance of the season, freshman Stephanie Heller improved her dual record to 2-0 with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Ashley Harrison at the No. 5 slot.
Berdala, playing at No. 3 singles, topped Hawes, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Nikki Hein notched her first dual singles win in the No. 6 position with a dominating 6-1, 6-1 victory over Casperson.
In No. 2 singles, McGaffigan blanked Baily, 6-0, 6-0, and stepped off the court just before teammate Batty. In the No. 1 position, Batty defeated Griffen, 6-1 and 7-5 in the second for the sweep.
The Hoosiers hit the road for their first away contests of the year. IU travels to No. 23 Wake Forest on Feb. 18, before taking on North Carolina-Greensboro on Feb. 19 in Winston-Salem, N.C.
