BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 31 Indiana women's tennis team topped regional foe DePaul, 6-1, on Feb. 12 at the Indiana Tennis Center. The win over the Blue Demons improved IU's record to 6-1 and its regional record to 2-0. The Hoosiers will take on in-state rival, Butler, at 3 p.m., in the second match of the day's doubleheader.
For the fifth time this season, the Hoosiers swept the doubles point to open the match. Senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan easily won at No. 1 doubles, 8-1, over DePaul's Gergana Ganeva and Dunja Antunovic. Freshman Alba Berdala and junior Cecile Perton stepped off the court next at the No. 3 position. The pair blanked Bojana Murisic and Brenda Leung, 8-0, to secure the doubles point.
At No. 2 doubles, sophomore Brianna Williams and partner freshman Sigrid Fisher jumped out to the early 3-0 lead against Anja Mihaldinec and Petra Rehusova. The DePaul duo battled back to tie the score at 4-4, but it was not enough as the Hoosiers prevailed, 8-6, for the sweep.
Williams maintained her perfect singles record with an easy 6-0, 6-1 win over Murisic in the No. 3 position. Currently, the Tampa, Fla., product is 6-0 in dual singles action.
Fischer topped Brenda Leung, 6-3, 6-2, at the No. 5 singles slot, while Perton sealed the match with a 6-2, 6-3 win at No. 6 over Rehusova.
At the No. 2 position, McGaffigan faced her second ranked opponent in Antunovic. Despite dropping the first set, 6-4, the Davenport, Iowa native, rallied to win the second, 3-6, but could not hold on in the tiebreaker and lost the hard-fought battle, 6-4, 3-6, 1-0(6).
Batty at No. 1 singles defeated No. 85 Ganeva in three sets, 6-4, 6-7, 1-0(6). Batty's win is the first over a ranked opponent this season.
Berdala was the last Hoosier to step off the court. Berdala rebounded after losing her first set, 4-6, to win her next set, 6-4. Down 3-0 in the third, Berdala fought hard to win 6-4 and claim the match.
