Hoosiers Drop Battle with Demon Deacons

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The No. 32 Indiana women's tennis team dropped a hard-fought, 5-2, battle to No. 21 Wake Forest on Feb. 17 in Winston-Salem, N.C. Despite winning the doubles point early in the match, the Hoosiers could not hold off the Demon Deacons to fall to 7-2 on the season. IU's only losses have come against top-25 teams.
"I am really pleased with our doubles play today," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "From top to bottom, we played the best in doubles that we have played all year. We got off to a slow start in singles but were much more competitive in the later sets. Overall, I am pleased with our doubles play and our total team effort today."
The Hoosiers got off to the early lead by winning all three doubles matches to claim the doubles point for the eighth time this season. At No. 1 singles, senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan defeated Alex Hirsch and Ana Jerman, 8-3. Sophomore Brianna Williams and freshman Sigrid Fischer topped Ashlee Davis and Christian Tara at No. 2 doubles, 8-5. In the No. 3 slot, junior Cecile Perton and freshman Alba Berdala defeated Sierra Poske and Christine Simpson, 8-4, for the sweep.
In singles, Batty fell to No. 42 Hirsch at the No. 1 position, 6-1, 7-6. At No. 2 singles, McGaffigan dropped the match to No. 64 Davis, 6-0, 6-1. In a hard-fought battle at No. 3 singles, Williams lost her first match of the season to Jerman in her first three-set match of the season, 6-2, 1-6, 6-3. Berdala, who played in the No. 4 slot, lost to Tara, 6-1, 7-5.
Fischer at No. 5 singles, earned the Hoosiers' second point of the match and only singles point by defeating Poske in three sets, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1. To round out singles, Perton fell to Simpson, 6-2, 6-2.
The Hoosiers are back in action on Sunday, Feb. 19 at 10 a.m., against UNC-Greensboro in Winston-Salem, N.C.
