Hoosiers Compete in Last Chance IU Open

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana men's and women's swimming teams competed in the first of two last chance IU Open meets at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatics Center in Bloomington, Ind., on Feb. 26. The 2006 Big Ten Champion men will be in action on March 4 for the second IU Open. Overall, the Hoosiers posted a pair of top-10 times in school history as well as seven personal bests.
In the opening event for the Hoosiers, freshman Kristin Cihoski placed second in the women's 500-yard freestyle with a 5:07.74 in her first collegiate swim in the event. Meanwhile, freshman Katy Sandberg finished third with a 5:23.50, while classmates Stephanie Wyman (5:32.13) and Andrea Weintraub (5:41.69) snared fifth and sixth place. Additionally, freshman Lizzy Brunett took seventh with a 5:57.88
In the women's 200-yard IM, senior Kristen Bradley won her heat with a 2:03.13, while junior Leila Vaziri touched in fourth with a 2:12.35.
In the women's 50-yard freestyle, freshman Abby Cooper placed sixth with a 24.53, while classmate Allison Kay touched 10th with a 25.54 in her initial collegiate swim in the event. Additionally, freshmen Caitlyn Heyman (25.58) and Abbey Mitchell (25.60) posted personal bests for 11th and 12th place to round out the Hoosier performance in the event.
In the women's 100-yard butterfly, junior Clarissa Wentworth tied for 10th all-time in school history with a personal-best time of 55.80, while Vaziri finished fourth in 58.70. Meanwhile, Cooper took eighth in 1:00.40 with her first collegiate competition in the event.
In the men's 100-yard butterfly, freshman Jeff Wood shattered his personal-best time with a first-place 52.25, while classmate Keith Dawley picked up fifth with a 54.00. Additionally, freshman Jimmy Schwartz took sixth in 55.46.
In an all-IU women's 200-yard freestyle, senior Doherty Colgin touched first in 1:52.55, while Brunett took second with a personal-best time of 2:16.90.
In the men's 200-yard freestyle, freshman Justin Peterfish placed third with a 1:47.83 in his first time swimming the event collegiately.
In the women's 200-yard breaststroke, freshman Sarah Stockwell improved her personal-best and second-fastest time in school history by .01 with a first-place 1:03.48. Meanwhile, Mitchell placed ninth with a 1:09.31, while Kay turned in an 11th-place 1:10.46 in her initial collegiate swim in the event.
In the women's 100-yard backstroke, Kay finished sixth with a 1:03.68 in her first time swimming the event collegiately.
In the women's 200-yard backstroke, junior Susanna Ernst touched first with a 2:03.42, while Cihoski placed second with a 2:15.08.
In the women's 100-yard freestyle, Vaziri took third in 52.27, while Cihoski placed seventh in 54.27. Additionally, Mitchell took ninth in her first collegiate swim with a 55.84, while freshman Sarah Jones posted a 57.90 for 10th. Moreover, Heyman touched in 11th in her first swim in the event at the college level with a 58.01.
In the women's 200-yard butterfly, Wentworth recorded a personal-best with a 2:07.52 for second, while freshman Katie Mitsch touched in third with a 2:18.34.
Next up, the swimmers await the unveiling of the 2006 NCAA Championships field, while the divers head to Columbus, Ohio on March 10-12 to battle their way to NCAAs.
