Hoosiers Fall to No. 5 Notre Dame

NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Indiana women's tennis team dropped to 9-3 with a 7-0 loss to in-state foe and No. 5 Notre Dame on Feb. 28 at the Eck Tennis Pavilion. The Fighting Irish are the fifth ranked opponent the Hoosiers have faced this season and the third this month.
For only the second time this season, IU lost the doubles point. All three of the Fighting Irish doubles pairs boast a national ranking. Sophomore Brianna Williams and freshman Sigrid Fischer fell, 8-2, to ND's No. 29 pair of Brook Buck and Kelcy Tefft at the No. 2 position. Fischer and Williams now hold a 9-2 record in dual doubles play.
Junior Cecile Perton and freshman Alba Berdala faced their first ranked opponent this season in No. 49 Lauren Connelly and Kristina Stastny at the No. 3 position. The Hoosier twosome's record dropped to 9-2 after suffering an 8-2. The loss secured the doubles point for the Irish.
At No. 1 singles, senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan gave the No. 2-ranked pair of Catrina Thompson and her twin sister Christian Thompson a run for their money. The Irish narrowly won, 8-4. Batty and McGaffigan are now 10-2 this season.
In singles, Buck handed Williams her third loss of the season with a 6-1, 6-0 victory. McGaffigan fell to No. 32 Christian Thompson at the No. 2 position, 6-3, 6-1. To clinch the match win, Batty lost to the Irish's No. 27 Catrina Thompson, 6-3, 6-4 at No. 1 singles. Both Batty and McGaffigan are now 8-4 this season in singles.
Perton, who played in the No. 6 slot, stepped off the court next after falling to Katie Potts, 6-3, 6-3. After dropping the first set, 6-2, Berdala at the No. 4 position battled Katie Potts to a tough 6-4 loss in the second. Perton now holds a 6-4 record in singles, while Berdala falls to 8-4.
In the contest's only three-set match, Fischer lost a heartbreaker to Stastny, 4-6, 6-3, 1-0(7). Fischer is now 9-3 this season.
