COLUMBUS, Ohio - Senior Ryan Fagan and sophomore Taylor Roberts each secured a berth at the 2006 NCAA Championships in Atlanta, Ga., from March 23-25 with outstanding performances on the three-meter at the Zone C Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on March 10.
"It was a really tough contest today," Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "Ryan and Taylor really hung in there. With the ebb-and-flow of competition, they never gave up. It really came down to their last dives."
Roberts came from behind on his final dive to win the three-meter zone crown with a 677.35 tally. The defending Big Ten Three-Meter champion nailed his last dive (an inward 2.5 somersault from a pike position) to score 63 points for the second consecutive round. He opened up the round with a tremendous forward 3.5 somersault from a pike position for 66.65 points.
Meanwhile, Fagan placed second with 671.45 points. The Pittsburgh, Pa., native opened up the round with his best dive (a forward 3.5 somersault from a pike position) to tally 63.55 points.
Additionally, senior Brian Mariano placed sixth with 622.70 points, while senior Jesse Rappaport finished in eighth with 604.30 points. Both will look toward the final two days of competition to earn their spots at NCAAs.
