COLUMBUS, Ohio - Sophomore Christina Loukas and junior Lindsay Weigle both punched their tickets to the 2006 NCAA Championships in Athens, Ga., from March 16-18 with tremendous performances at the Zone C Diving Championships in Columbus, Ohio, on March 10.
"We knew Christina would qualify for NCAAs," Indiana head diving coach Dr. Jeff Huber said. "I am more interested to see what Christina can do on the three-meter and platform. She should contend for first place on the three meter tomorrow."
Loukas closed out the day in second place with a 615.80 tally. The defending Big Ten Diver of the Year and of the Championships nailed her fifth-round dive (a reverse 1.5 somersault with 1.5 twists) for 58.50 points to secure her spot at NCAAs.
Meanwhile, Weigle will return to the national meet after a one-year hiatus. The Bloomington, Ind., product placed fourth with a 560.90 total to clinch a berth at NCAAs. Her best dive of finals came in the second round when she posted a 50.70 with a forward 2.5 somersault from a pike position.
"This is well deserved for Lindsay," Huber said. "She is an All-American and should have been at NCAAs last year. She came back and trained hard and is starting to do her best diving of the season when it counts."
Additionally, senior Heather Chapman will have some work to do the next two days after finishing 12th with a 507.65 during the final session.
