BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The No. 35 Indiana women's tennis team defeated its fourth ranked opponent of the season in No. 33 Purdue on March 24 at the Indiana Tennis Center. The Hoosiers' 5-2 victory earned Indiana one point in the AT&T Crimson and Gold Cup, giving IU the 9-5 edge. Indiana claimed the doubles point for the 13th time this season and earned wins in the No. 1, 3, 5 and 6 positions. The win improved the Hoosiers' record to 12-4, while Purdue dropped to 6-5 on the season.
"This was a great win for us," Indiana head coach Lin Loring said. "We were pretty evenly matched as the rankings indicate. I was really pleased with the way we played today."
Senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan improved their doubles record to 13-3 at No. 1 singles with an 8-5 win over Purdue's Hala Sufi and Mallory Voelker. The Hoosier pair took the early lead in the match and ever let down to claim a team-high 13 victories.
Despite a late-match run, the No. 2 pair of sophomore Brianna Williams and freshman Sigrid Fischer fell 8-5 to Brooke Beier and Randi Schuler. Williams and Fischer dropped to 11-4 on the season.
The doubles point came down to the No. 3 contest. In a thrilling tiebreaker match, the Indiana team of freshman Alba Berdala and junior Cecile Perton battled back from a 4-1 deficit to tie the score at five against Purdue's Brittany Minna and Stephanie Wooten. The two teams traded points until the match was forced into a tiebreaker. IU took the early lead in the breaker and went on to win the extra set, 7-4 and claim both the 9-8 win. Indiana recorded its 13th doubles point of the season, while Berdala and Perton improved to 11-4.
Fischer opened up singles play against the Boilermakers with a dominating 6-0, 6-0 blanking of Wooten at the No. 5 position. Fischer moves to 13-3 on the season, including wins in four of her last five contests.
Berdala dropped to 8-8 after suffering a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Voelker at the No. 4 position to put Purdue on the board.
The Boilermakers tied the match at two after No. 60 Schuler defeated McGaffigan at the No. 2 position, 6-1, 7-6. Schuler is the fourth ranked opponent the Davenport, Iowa product has faced this year. McGaffigan falls to 10-6 on the season.
The Hoosiers took back the lead thanks to Perton at the No. 6 slot. Perton improved her overall record to 9-5 with a win over Anna Dzeva, 6-2, 6-1.
To clinch the match, Batty battled back in the second set against Sufi at No. 1 singles to claim the 6-4, 7-6 victory. The IU senior improved her record to 11-5.
In the match's only three-set contest, Williams defeated Beier, 6-4, 2-6, 6-3 to earn the 5-2 win for Indiana. Williams improved her season's record to 10-4.
In exhibition singles play, freshmen Stephanie Heller and Marah Calvo took a set off Whitney Reys. Heller won 6-1, while Calvo topped the Boilermaker, 6-2.
Indiana is back in action on Sunday, March 26 against No. 59 Illinois at 10 a.m., at the Indiana Tennis Center.
