EVANSTON, Ill. - The No. 26 Indiana women's tennis team dropped a tough, 7-0, match to No. 6 Northwestern on April 1 at Northwestern's Vandy Christie Tennis Center in Evanston, Ill. The Hoosiers fell to 13-5 overall and 3-1 in the Big Ten, while the Wildcats improved to 12-3 and 4-0 in the conference. Indiana head coach Lin Loring remains one win away from his 300th career Big Ten victory.
For only the fourth time this season, IU did not claim the doubles point. The Hoosiers came up just shot in all three matches. The No. 3 pair of junior Cecile Perton and freshman Alba Berdala stepped off the court first after suffering an 8-4 loss to Northwestern's Jamie Peisel and Nazlie Ghazal. The combo fell to 12-5 on the season.
In a battle at the No. 1 position, NU's pair of Cristelle Grier and Feriel Esseghir narrowly bested IU's senior Sarah Batty and junior Laura McGaffigan by a score of 8-6. The match snapped the Hoosier duo's four-match winning streak and dropped their team-best record to 14-4.
At the No. 2 position, the Wildcat tandem of Georgia Rose and Alexis Conill topped freshman Sigrid Fischer and sophomore Brianna Williams, 8-6. Fischer and Williams fell to 16-6 on the season.
In singles, Northwestern's No. 9-ranked Grier blanked McGaffigan, 6-0, 6-0 at the No. 2 singles slot. The loss dropped the junior's record to 11-7. Grier is the seventh ranked foe McGaffigan has faced in the No. 2 position this season. At the No. 3 spot, Williams fell to No. 26 Prousis, 6-0, 6-2. Williams' record moved to 11-5 this season, while Prousis is the second ranked competitor Williams has faced this season. Berdala, playing at the No. 5 position, lost to Esseghir, 6-3, 6-3. The straight-set loss dropped the Geron, Spain product to 9-9 on the season.
Despite a close first set at No. 1 singles, Batty could not snap No. 36 Rose's 11-match win streak as she fell to the Wildcat, 7-6, 6-0. Batty fell to 13-7 on the season.
Entering the match undefeated at the No. 4 slot and so far this season in the Big Ten, Fischer dropped to 12-4 this season after falling to Peisel in a close, 7-6, 6-4 battle. Also undefeated in conference play this season, Peton lost a tough, 7-5, 6-1 match at the No. 6 slot to Ghazal. Perton dropped to 10-6 this season at the No. 6 position.
