CINCINNATI - The Indiana baseball team used a five-run seventh inning to cap an 11-game road trip with 10-6 victory over Xavier at Hayden Field on April 12. IU erased a two-run deficit with its seventh inning surge. The Hoosiers improved to 10-18 on the year, while the Musketeers dropped to 10-24.
Indiana used four straight hits, including a pair of the extra-base variety, to put a five-spot on the board in the seventh. Junior first baseman Ben Greenspan doubled into the left field corner to put a pair in scoring position with one out. Freshman designated hitter Cameron Satterwhite and senior outfielder Zach Boswell evened things with back-to-back singles, plating senior center fielder Reggie Watson and Greenspan. Junior third baseman Steve Head followed suit with a double into the left field corner to bring Satterwhite around with the third run of the inning. Junior shortstop Josh Richardson notched an RBI ground out and Boswell scored on a wild pitch to give IU an 8-5 lead.
The Hoosiers tacked on a single run in the eighth and ninth innings. In the eighth, Satterwhite doubled into the left-field corner to bring Greenspan all the way around from first to give IU a four-run cushion, 9-5. After the Musketeers recorded an unearned run in the bottom of the inning, junior second baseman Keith Haas provided IU with an insurance run in the ninth. The North Olmsted, Ohio native singled up the middle to bring Head around for the final Hoosier run.
Senior Adam Poole pitched three scoreless innings to notch his first victory of the season. Over those three innings, the Orleans, Ind., native only allowed one hit, while walking a pair and striking out one. Freshman Tyler Tuffs finished things up by not allowing an earned run over the final two frames with a strike out.
Haas led the Hoosiers, going 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI, a pair of runs scored and three stolen bases. Satterwhite, Watson, senior left fielder Jay Brant and Head each finished with two hits, while Satterwhite drove in two and Greenspan and Head each scored a pair of runs.
Xavier got on the board first with an unearned run. Neil Lindgren walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch by Hoosier freshman Chris Hervey. With Colin Salzenstein at the plate, Hervey threw a pick off attempt at second wide of the bag and into left center field allowing Lindgren to move over to third. Salzenstein brought him home with a sacrifice fly to left field.
Indiana answered in the next half inning with a pair of runs. Richardson doubled to the left-center field wall with one out in the top of the second. Haas singled back through the box to plate Richardson and even the contest at one apiece. Haas stole second and advanced to third on a ground out chopper by freshman catcher Billy O'Conner. Brant brought him around to score with a sharp single just past the Musketeer second baseman into center field.
The Hoosiers had a chance to extend its advantage in the third inning. Eight straight balls to start the third inning put senior first baseman Ryan Parker and Watson on first and second with no one out. Xavier starter Steve Sakosits coaxed a pop out from freshman designated hitter Cameron Satterwhite and a fielder's choice by Boswell, before Head put a scare into the Musketeer faith. Head forced the Xavier left fielder back to the warning track before the side was retired.
The Musketeers evened the game on another Hoosier miscue in the bottom of the third inning. Richard Bautista gave Xavier a runner in scoring position to start the inning as he moved around to second base on a two-base throwing error by IU shortstop Richardson. The Musketeer left fielder moved over to third on a ground out by Steve Brown before scoring on a sacrifice fly to center field by Lindgren.
Indiana notched an unearned run of its own to regain the lead, 3-2, in the top of the fourth. Haas and Brant drew walks to place runners at first and second with two outs and Watson at bat. The Hoosiers executed a double steal and Haas trotted home when the catcher's throw to third went into left field.
With a trio of two-out runs, Xavier regained its first lead at 5-3 since the opening frame. The Musketeers led off the bottom of the fourth inning with back-to-back singles, before the Hoosiers registered a pair of outs. A walk loaded the bases for the Musketeers before a pair of singles up the middle plated the runs. Bautista brought home Chris Lozan from third on a single through the middle, while Matt Waskerwitz and Rob Kelley came around to score on Brown's hit.
Hervey threw four innings and gave up three earned runs while striking out three. Despite allowing two unearned runs in the first three innings, the freshman right hander did not allow a hit prior to the fourth inning.
The Hoosiers return to the friendly confines of Sembower Field for a Big Ten series against arch rival Purdue, April 14-16. Indiana will host the opener against the Boilers on Friday, April 14, at 3 p.m., before a doubleheader on Saturday, April 15, starting at 1 p.m. The series finale is an Easter Sunday affair slated for 1 p.m. A point in the AT&T Crimson and Gold Cup will be on the line when the intrastate foes square off. The Hoosiers currently lead the all-sport series between the two schools, 9-5.
