BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana softball team forged a late-game surge, but the rally fell short as Iowa took game two of a doubleheader, 3-2, at the IU Softball Field on April 23. Indiana won game one 12-4. With the split, Indiana moved to 24-22-1 and 6-9 in the Big Ten, while Iowa is now 33-17 and 9-5 in league action.
Senior pitcher Mariangee Bogado capped off a stellar weekend in the circle, leading the Hoosiers to a game-one victory with seven strikeouts. The win is Bogado's third of the weekend. Senior pitcher Megan Roark teamed with Bogado to provide a one-two punch for the Hoosiers. Roark struck out five in game two of the series.
Two of IU's top bats during past three games, Bogado and freshman shortstop Stephanie Pellerito, went 3-for-5 and 3-for-6 on the day to pace the Hoosiers.
In game one, Indiana took care of Iowa, run-ruling the Hawkeyes 12-4 in six innings. The Hoosiers were unstoppable at the plate, scoring three runs in the first, third and fourth innings, while polishing off the win with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth.
Junior first baseman Rachel Terry smashed the game-ending home run in the bottom of the sixth to seal the 12-4 victory. IU out-hit Iowa 9-8 and took advantage of three Hawkeye errors. Terry finished the game 3-for-4.
The 12 runs scored by IU are the most scored by a Hoosier squad over a Big Ten opponent since 1996, when Indiana defeated Northwestern 12-1. The two home runs in the first game by junior center fielder Kim Richards and Terry also helped the 2006 squad set the all-time record for home runs in a season with 37. The new mark replaces the previous record of 35 set in 2004.
In game two, the Hoosiers jumped out first with a run in the top of the third. Bogado constructed the score as she singled down the left field line to score junior pinch runner Abby Page from second. Page took base for Pellerito who reached on a single to center field.
The Hawkeyes, however, took the lead in the bottom of the frame off a pair of runs. Another Iowa run in the bottom of the fourth gave the visiting Hawkeyes a 3-1 advantage.
In the top of the sixth, Indiana looked to tie the ballgame after senior Lauren Hines rounded the bases on a single by Terry and Pellerito, moving the Hoosiers a run away from tying the game.
Despite a hard-fought effort late in the game, Indiana could not tie the contest in the top of the seventh which sealed the win for Iowa by a score of 3-2.
The Hoosiers next open a four-game road swing on April 24 when they travel to Muncie, Ind., to take on Ball State for a 4 p.m. match. Indian then travels to Terre Haute, Ind., to take on Indiana State for a 3 p.m. game before heading to Minneapolis, Minn., for a two-game series against the Golden Gophers on April 28-29. ,
