Towns Takes 100m Big Ten Title, IU Finishes in Seventh

EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana women's track and field team took seventh with 52 points at the 2006 Big Ten Outdoor Track and Field Championships, while Ara Towns earned the 100m title on May 14 at Michigan State's Ralph Young Track and Field Complex. In the final day of competition, the Hoosier women tallied five regional-qualifying marks and five personal bests.
After taking first in the prelims of the 100m, Towns won her first conference title with a regional-qualifying and first-place time of 11.61. Towns is the first Hoosier female since Rachelle Boone in 2001 to take home the 100m Big Ten crown.
The Indiana relay teams fared well in the final day of competition. The 4x100m relay team of Lorian Price, Towns, Kyndal Carr and Zakiya Robinson took fifth in the finals with a time of 40.74. The 4x400m team claimed fifth as well with a time of 3:44.91.
Jessica Gall scored for the Hoosiers for the second time during the three-day meet with a regional-qualifying and personal-best time of 16:15.47 in the 5,000m. Teammate Kelly Siefker also met a regional standard in the 5,000m with a time 16:49.77.
Larra Overton continued to excel in the 1,500m. In the finals of the event, Overton turned in a personal-best time of 4:22.80. Additionally, Overton's time met the regional standard in the event. Wendi Robinson also recorded a personal best with her 11th-place time of 4:32.22.
In the finals of the 400m, Stacey Clausing took fourth with a time of 55.02. Clausing then scored for IU by taking sixth in the 200m with a time of 24.45. Towns finished in seventh in the 200m, crossing the line in 25.03.
Sarah Gilleran scored for Indiana in the high jump. Gilleran cleared a personal-best 1.65m (5-05.00) en route to a seventh-place finish. Jean Schaffer, who competed in the heptathlon the previous day, shared 12th place with teammate Laura Oehlman. The Hoosiers recorded jumps of 1.60m (5-03.00). Oehlman's jump marked a new personal best.
Tiffany Howard took 18th in the discus with a throw of 36.17m (118-08).
The Hoosiers will travel to Knoxville, Tenn., for the Mideast Regionals on May 26-27.
