LOUISVILLE, Ky. - The tenth-ranked Indiana field hockey team closed the preseason slate with its second scrimmage of the year against No. 14 Louisville on Aug. 22 at Trager Stadium. Utilizing their deep lineup, the Hoosiers fell, 3-2, despite goals from senior forward Lydia Schrott and senior midfielder Rachel Telian. IU opens the regular season this weekend on the road against No. 19 Virginia and Longwood.
Louisville jumped out to the early lead minutes into the contest, capitalizing on a penalty corner opportunity. Twelve minutes later, the Hoosiers answered as Schrott, IU's leading scorer from a year ago, drove 20 yards into the circle for the score.
The Cardinals stuck again in the 38th minute to give them the 2-1 advantage just after the half. After trading possessions, Indiana knotted the score for the second time in the match as Telian scored off a single penalty corner shot. Junior forward Kate O'Connell and freshman back Fenna Geuskens were credited with the assists.
Louisville quickly transitioned to offense, scoring 40 seconds later to claim the preseason win.
For the game, Indiana out shot Louisville, 12-8, while sophomore goalkeeper Jobi Manson recorded one save.
The Hoosiers and the Cardinals will meet again in the regular season on Friday, Oct. 6 back in Louisville.
IU opens the regular season in Charlottesville, Va., against ACC foe Virginia on Aug. 26 at 1 p.m.
