Morgantown, W.Va. - The Indiana volleyball team swept tournament host West Virginia, 3-0, to close out the West Virginia Tournament. After winning all three of their matches with perfect 3-0 scores, the Hoosiers captured the tournament and open the season with a 3-0 record. West Virginia is now 1-2 on the season.
"I was exceptionally pleased with our offense in the match," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "The offense really got into a rhythm and our passing was on target."
Sophomore Erica Short led the Hoosiers with 16 kills in the match, while junior Lauren Ditteon had 13 kills. Ditteon, who was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament, also had a .500 hitting percentage on the match. Short and senior Sara Diehl were also named to the All-Tournament team following the conclusion of the match.
"Lauren had an incredible week," Weismiller said. "She had a very strong performance in all of our matches and really led the team. Erica was also very strong, and was our go-to player while Sara was not only strong with her passing, but was a force from the service line as well."
Although the Hoosiers spotted the Mountaineers the first two points of the first game of Saturday evenings match, IU quickly righted the ship and took a commanding lead. Indiana captured the game, 30-18.
The second game was close in the opening minutes, with West Virginia once again taking the early lead, this time at 8-6. However, Indiana came back to take the 9-8 lead on a kill by Ditteon and never looked back, taking the game by a score of 30-20.
In the final stanza, the two teams were tied 10 times in the early going before West Virginia opened up a three-point advantage at 21-18. The Hoosiers came back to knot the score at 21-21 and then took the lead on a kill by junior Gabrielle Allison. Indiana closed out the game, 30-26, to capture the match.
In addition to their success on offense throughout the match, the Hoosiers also had 10 team blocks over the three games Saturday evening. "I was very pleased with our blocking today," Weismiller said. "It keeps getting better and better."
The Hoosiers will open up at home on Friday, Sept. 1 when they host Marshall in the TIS Bookstore Invitational. The match is set to begin at 7:00 p.m. and will be played in University Gym.
