MADISON, Wis. - The Indiana women's soccer team outshot Creighton 27-11, but the Blue Jays (1-1) topped the Hoosiers in the scoring department by a tally of 2-1 on Sunday, Aug. 27, in the second game of the season for each team. IU (0-2) outshot both teams it played in the Wisconsin Soccer Showcase, but was unable to leave Madison with a victory.
"Soccer can be a really cruel game," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We started off all over them, it was just an onslaught, but if you don't finish the job then you're fighting uphill. If we can't convert 27 chances into more than one goal, it's going to be a tough season."
Thirteen different Hoosiers registered shots in the contest, with seven different players putting chances on goal. Kristin Radcliffe scored the lone goal for the Hoosiers, putting home a header 72 minutes into the contest. Lauren Lamping served a corner into the box, and the ball deflected off a Hoosier and back to Lamping. The senior then played a cross to Radcliffe on the back post, and the junior headed it home for her first goal of the season and eighth career tally.
"The good thing is that we had a lot of players have good opportunities, and that was in part due to good ball movement," Lyon said. "There were a ton of great things that happened to us, but unfortunately the end product wasn't there. We could have as easily had two wins, and instead we have too losses. We're pretty darn close and I'm confident we're only going to get better."
The Blue Jays got the game's first goal in the 22nd minute, when Anne Peetz converted a counter-attack for her first goal of the season. Marcy Gans was awarded an assist on the play. Creighton upped its lead to 2-0 early on in the second half, when Toch Ihemelu tallied her second goal of the season in the 53rd minute. Tristan Moser-Bleil assisted on the goal.
Stacey Van Boxmeer was credited with two saves on the afternoon, while Creighton's Kristen Casey made six saves in the contest. The Hoosiers had 10 saves to the Blue Jays' one, and IU outshot their adversaries by an 18-5 margin in the opening half.
The Hoosiers will return to action on Friday, Sept. 1, when they will face Baylor in the opening game of the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge in Indianapolis' Lawrence Park. IU will host Texas Tech on Saturday, Sept. 2, for a 7 p.m. contest at Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium.
