FARMVILLE, Va. - The No. 10 Indiana field hockey team notched its first win of the 2006 campaign with a 5-0 shutout victory over Longwood in Farmville, Va., on Aug. 27. Led by senior All-American forward Lydia Schrott's third career hat trick, a pair of goals from senior back Morgan Miller and a stifling defensive effort, the Hoosiers improved to 1-1 on the season.
Indiana registered the first points of the game, as senior forward Lydia Schrott converted an open look at the top of the circle in the 1-0 lead with 33:42 on the clock.
Two minutes later, junior back Erin Isler drew the penalty corner for the Hoosiers, setting up Indiana's next goal. Freshman Meg O'Connell worked her way in front of the circle to set up Schrott's second goal of the game. O'Connell's assist marked the first points of her Hoosier career.
Miller registered her first goal of the year to increase the Hoosiers' lead to 3-0 with 27:27 left in the half. Schrott drew the corner for IU, before Miller's powerful first shot off the corner hit the boards for the goal. Junior midfielder Meredith Brown and junior forward Kate O'Connell earned the assist.
Longwood threatened offensively with time winding down in the first period, but the Lancers' efforts were stifled by first team All-Big Ten goalkeeper Haley Exner, who collected her first of two saves in the half with six minutes.
For the half, Indiana out shot Longwood 8-3, while taking eight corners to Longwood's two. Exner had two saves at the conclusion of the first period.
Schrott recorded Indiana's first hat trick of the season and the third of her career when she scored just in front of the cage to increase Indiana's lead to 4-0 one minute into the second period.
Just over nine minutes remaining in regulation, Miller notched her second score of the game off the first shot of a penalty corner. Again, Brown and O'Connell were credited with the assists.
Schrott tied her mark as Indiana's single-game leading scorer with three goals in the contest. The Quarryville, Pa., native's hat trick marked the fourth time in program history that a Hoosier has scored three goals in a game.
For the game, Indiana out shot the Lancers, 23-4, and only gave up three corners, while Miller's nine shots was a game-high.
Exner earned the first shutout of the season to go along with two saved, while freshman goalkeeper Jobi Manson saw 9:13 minutes in goal.
The Hoosiers are back in action on Sept. 2 to take on Ball State. Indiana and Ball State will square off in Muncie, Ind., at 2 p.m. The two teams met in the preseason, where IU claimed the 5-3 victory.
