GREENSBORO, N.C. - Liz Holby scored her first career goal and Stacey Van Boxmeer made five saves as the Indiana women's soccer team earned a 1-1 tie against UNC Greensboro on Sunday, Sept. 17. The tie upped the Hoosiers' unbeaten streak to six games and moved IU's record to 3-2-3 on the season.
"It was a solid performance, not spectacular but certainly not poor, just a solid performance and we obviously need more than that to get a win despite outshooting them and getting a lot of great chances," head coach Mick Lyon said. "We keep continuing to search for ways to convert our multiple chances. It was a very good performance by Stacey Van Boxmeer and Lauren Lamping, who are both playing with extreme confidence. It was nice for Liz Holby to get a goal and good to have two freshmen score on the weekend, we just need more goals."
The Hoosiers got on the board in the closing minutes of the first half, when Holby knocked home her first goal of the season with six seconds to play in the half. Megan Pipkens found Holby and the freshman took a shot from 8 yards out to beat keeper Katherine Ryan to the right side. It was Pipkens' second assist of the season and 12th of her career.
Greensboro evened the score at 1-1 in the 67th minute, as Karla Davis put home her first goal of the season. Kelly Attayek took the ball up the right side and crossed a pass to Davis in front of the net, and the junior deposited it past Van Boxmeer from close range to tie the contest. It was the first second-half goal the Hoosiers have allowed since Aug. 27 against Creighton.
Neither team was able to score in overtime, though each squad put two shots on net. IU outshot the Spartans 17-11 on the contest, meaning that the Hoosiers have outshot all eight of their opponents this season. Indiana's unbeaten streak is the longest since the Hoosiers ran off 14 wins in a row from Oct. 3, 1993-Sept. 14, 1994.
Indiana is back in action on Friday, Sept. 22, with the Big Ten opening weekend on the slate. The Hoosiers host Minnesota Friday at 7 p.m. EDT and Ohio State Sunday, Sept. 24, at noon EDT.
