Bloomington, Ind. - Eight different Hoosiers tallied kills as the Indiana volleyball team defeated Chicago State, 3-0 (30-17, 30-14, 30-14) in their second match of the TIS Bookstore Invitational. Indiana is now 5-0 on the season and has swept all of their matches.
"It was really exciting to see a lot of different players out there today, and they all played well," senior Anne Grabow said. Junior Annie Moddrell seconded that sentiment. "We didn't skip a beat heading into this match," said Moddrell. "It was exciting to come off a match like the one we played last night and to keep it up. Our setters did a great job and our team chemistry on the court was great."
After spotting Chicago State the first two points of the opening game, Indiana went on a 14-7 run to open up a nine point advantage at 19-10. That lead stayed consistent throughout the remainder of the game and the Hoosiers closed out the game at 30-17 on a kill by freshman Allison Regas.
The second game was all Hoosiers from the beginning, as Indiana took the lead at 3-0 and never looked back. Sophomore Emily Zulauf had four kills in the game and classmate Elizabeth Hathaway closed out the stanza with a service ace to give the Hoosiers the 30-14 win.
The final game played out much like the second, with the Hoosiers opening up a large advantage early on. Grabow had four kills in the game, the last of which came to close out the stanza with the score at 30-14 in Indiana's favor.
For the match, Zulauf led the Hoosiers with seven kills while Moddrell and Grabow each added five. Sophomore Kari Morgenstein tallied two service aces in the Indiana win while the team had seven blocks on the match.
"I thought the team did very well," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "We put a lot of different players out there, and communication was key in asking them to complete together, and they did a good job with that."
Bloomington native Shamara Clark led Chicago State with six kills in the match.
The Hoosiers will close out the TIS Bookstore Invitational with a 7:00 p.m. matchup against Maryland in University Gym. Both teams are undefeated for the tournament thus far, with Maryland defeating Marshall, 4-1, earlier on Saturday. All matches are open to the public and free of charge.
