BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's soccer team earned its first victory of the 2006 season with a 4-0 triumph over visiting Texas Tech (2-2-0) on Saturday, Sept. 2, on Yeagley Field at Armstrong Stadium. The Hoosiers went undefeated in the Big Ten-Big 12 Challenge to improve their record on the season to 1-2-1.
Indiana got goals from four different players - three in the first half - to cement the victory. Head coach Mick Lyon was pleased with his team's efforts for the evening.
"I told the team that the best stat is that we had 18 shots and scored four goals," Lyon said. "That's good decision-making, that's good execution. It's what we've been harping on in practice and that's where we succeeded. It was an undefeated weekend and that's what we can be proud of."
Lindsay McCarthy netted her first goal of the year in the 13th minute to give the Hoosiers a 1-0 lead. Carrie DeFreece broke up the right side and sent a cross through the box to McCarthy at the back post, and the junior deposited it in the back of the net for the goal.
IU made it 2-0 in the 23rd minute, when the Hoosiers were awarded a free kick 35 yards out from goal. Lauren Lamping took the kick and sent it toward the far post, and the ball cleared everyone and tucked just under the crossbar for the senior's first career goal.
Indiana strung the lead to three in the 35th minute, this time on a beautiful play by Megan Pipkens and Kristin Radcliffe. Pipkens beat her defender and moved into the goal box, then slid a pass to a streaking Radcliffe, who buried it for her second goal of the season. The Hoosiers outshot the Red Raiders 9-1 in the first half.
In the second half, Lamping made it three straight games with an assist, this time on a goal by Katy Stewart. Lamping took a corner from the left side and sent it into the box, where Stewart fended off a Texas Tech player and headed it off the bottom of the crossbar and into the net in the 48th minute.
Indiana has now outshot all four of its opponents in 2006, as it racked up 19 shots to the Red Raiders' eight in the contest. Stacey Van Boxmeer made four saves in her 72:55 of action, while Megan Reinhardt played the rest of the time in goal for IU. Tina Rincon played 74:36 for TTU, making four saves.
The Hoosiers will play host to the Old National Bank Hoosier Classic next weekend, as IU welcomes Northern Arizona, Rhode Island and Wisconsin-Milwaukee to Bloomington. The Hoosiers will face NAU on Friday, Sept. 8, at 7:30 p.m. EDT while UWM and URI go head-to-head at 5 p.m.
