Hoosiers Upset No. 19 Michigan To Open Big Ten Play

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana University volleyball team opened Big Ten play with a bang on Friday, upsetting No. 19 Michigan, 3-2, to improve to 10-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference on the season. The Hoosiers had 23 total blocks in the match, the third-best total in program history.
"It took a while for us to settle in," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "But everyone stuck with it and pulled out the victory. It was truly a team effort, and we got big plays from everyone."
To open the match, Michigan came out strong and captured the first stanza with a score of 30-22. Emily Zulauf had four kills in the game for the Hoosiers and Gabrielle Allison added two. Annie Moddrell tallied one solo block and three block assists in the frame.
The second game fell in the Hoosiers' favor, 30-28. Zulauf added to her kills total with six more in that game, and she was joined by Erica Short, who tallied five kills. Short also had one block solo in the stanza.
The score again flipped back to favor the Wolverines in the third game, 30-20. Short had five kills in that frame while Moddrell tallied two solo blocks to up her total.
Indiana tied the score at two games apiece when they took the fourth game, 30-28. Moddrell had four kills in the frame, as did Allison. Moddrell and Lauren Ditteon each had three block assists in the game, and Short and Sarah Diehl both picked up five digs in the IU victory.
After the Hoosiers forced the decisive fifth game of the match, they took the early 2-1 advantage in the final game. After Michigan knotted the score at 5-5 midway through the game, a kill by Moddrell and two consecutive errors by the Wolverines put the Hoosiers up 8-5 and they never looked back, taking the game by a score of 15-12.
For the match, Zulauf had a career-high 14 kills and Short added 16 kills and 10 digs for her third double-double of the season. However, it was the blocks that told the story for IU in the match, as the Hoosiers turned in the third-best performance in the programs history with 23 total blocks, and it is also the most blocks in a five-game match in Indiana history. The 10 solo blocks recorded by the team also stands as a tie for fourth in program history and ties the most ever in a five-game match.
Overall, Moddrell recorded three solo blocks and nine block assists while Short also added three solo blocks and three block assists. Ditteon also had one solo block and six block assists in the Indiana victory.
The Hoosiers will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 23 when they travel to Michigan State. Match time is set for 5 p.m.
