EAST LANSING, Mich. - The Indiana University volleyball team fell to Michigan State, 3-1, to close out its first Big Ten weekend. The Hoosiers are now 10-4 overall and 1-1 against conference opponents.
"It was definitely a tough night," head coach Katie Weismiller said. "We looked good, but we made to many unforced errors down the stretch. Michigan State was able to pull out the big points when it counted. We played a very good team tonight, but we feel that we gave one up on the road."
The Hoosiers opened the match by taking the quick 1-0 lead on a kill by Allison Regas to open the first game and then went up 2-0 on a block by Regas and Gabrielle Allison. Despite the early IU lead, the Spartans came back to knot the score at 9-9. The two teams traded points back and forth before a kill by Annie Moddrell put the Hoosiers back on top, 13-12. Indiana held onto that advantage, and it grew to 25-19 on three consecutive kills by Erica Short. The Hoosier took the game, 30-23.
In the second game, Michigan State took the early lead at 1-0, but the Hoosiers held on to tie the score at 4-4 on a kill by Moddrell. The Spartans then rattled off three straight points to go up 7-4, and the lead held throughout the remainder of the game. Michigan State took the second frame, 30-23.
The third game was tight throughout, as the score was tied 12 different times during the frame. Michigan State took back the lead at 20-19 on an attack error by Short and captured the game, 30-26. In the final frame, a service error by Caitlin Watts gave the Spartans the lead at 24-23 after a back-and-forth battle between the two teams. Michigan State then tallied two consecutive service aces and a kill to add to their advantage and then took the game, and the match, 30-26.
For the match, Short led the Hoosiers with 24 kills. She was followed in double-digits by Allison, who had 13 kills, Emily Zulauf with 12 kills and Moddrell with 10 kills. Lauren Ditteon had three service aces and 10 digs for Indiana, while Moddrell, Regas and Allison each had five block assists.
Indiana will return home to open the Big Ten home slate on Friday, Sept. 29 against No. 2 Penn State. Match time is set for 7 p.m. and will be played in University Gym.
